Read More	Julia Davis Brown \| 1913 - 2010 \| Obituary Born: February 20, 1913 Died: February 16, 2010 BROWN, Julia Davis, 96, of Crewe, went to be with her Lord peacefully with her family by her side on Tuesday, February 16, 2010. She was born on February 20, 1913 in Warren County, N.C. When she was four years old, her family moved to Meredithville in Brunswick County, Va., where she grew up on a large farm. She was the sixth child of Marvin Mann and Lucy Hanie White Davis. Her mother died when she was nine years old, leaving behind eight children. This tragedy drew her family closer together. Her father died in 1961. She was predeceased by seven siblings. Her husband, Wilmer "Graham" Brown, died in 1966 after 21 years of marriage. She was a graduate of Blackstone College for Girls, Blackstone, Va. in 1933, where she received her Associate's Degree in Music and Dramatic Arts, and from Longwood College, where she received her B.S. Degree (1953) and Master's Degree in Education in 1959. She was a member of Phi Gamma Mu and Phi Delta Kappa Professional Fraternities. She was a music teacher in the Nottoway County Public School System for 23 years and retired in 1976. During her career, she worked for 17 summers on the staff of the Virginia State Music Camp; served on the committee to revise the State Music Guide; was state secretary and treasurer of the Virginia Elementary Music Teachers; gave teaching demonstrations at the Virginia State Music Camp and Longwood College; and became a life member of the Virginia Music Educators Association and Virginia Music Educators Conference. In the 1970s, she organized a school chorus at Burkeville Elementary, which made various performances in the community and on the "Doug Hill Show" at WWBT Channel 12 in Richmond. In addition to public school, she taught private music lessons in organ, piano, and voice, and directed music and was organist at various intervals for a number of churches. She had a strong faith and loved her Lord. She was a member of the Crewe United Methodist Church, where she taught the Fidelity Sunday School Class and was involved in church activities. Although she retired as a teacher, her love for community and country continued the same pattern. From 1972 to 1987, she was president of the National Association of Blackstone College Alumnae, which in 1969 established the George P. Adams Memorial Scholarship Fund, which continues today to award college scholarships annually to alumnae descendents. She was a member of the James Allen Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution, where she served as regent. Working through DAR, she became one of the chief promoters of the patriotic Peter Francisco Festivals held annually in Crewe.
