Description	:	Lotia Arney Sheeley was born on the farm that belonged to her grandfather, William Arney, to William's son, Wilkie Arney, and Minnie Hilsabeck Arney. She was an avid musician, and with the ardent support of her father, she developed her talents in high school in Albion, Iowa, and then at Coe College in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. Read More	Lotia Arney Sheeley was born on the farm that belonged to her grandfather, William Arney, to William's son, Wilkie Arney, and Minnie Hilsabeck Arney. She was an avid musician, and with the ardent support of her father, she developed her talents in high school in Albion, Iowa, and then at Coe College in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. She participated in the Chautauqua movement during the second decade of the 1900s as a musician and dancer. She married Ray Matthew Sheeley on September 22, 1921, in Eldora, Iowa. They settled initially in Vinton, Iowa, where Ray Sheeley worked for the railroad until he founded a roofing business, Sheeley Roofing Co. in Marshalltown around 1927. They had one child, Betty Jo Sheeley Wilcox, born in 1922. Lotia was certified to teach music at Coe College and continued to give music lessons throughout her life. She was an accomplished accompanist. Before the "talkies", she played film background music in movie theatres regularly. Her husband, Ray Sheeley, passed away in 1961, and thereafter she became increasingly involved in the lives and activities of her five grandchildren. She was a beloved grandmother, all the more deeply missed after her sudden death in an automobile accident in August 1968. She was an active member of the First Methodist Church in Marshalltown where her funeral was held, officiated by her son-in-law, the Rev. Dr. Wilbur F. Wilcox. She was always known for her musicianship and for her meticulous housekeeping and flamboyant, colorful dress.
