Next above the "Sheltering Arms," lies the land, given by Lt. Thomas Leffingwell to his son Ensign Thomas, and by the Ensign to his son Thomas, and at the death of the latter in 1733, it passes to his son Samuel. This Samuel Leffingwell (b. 1722), probably lived for a time with his widowed mother, in the homestead across the street. In the will of Lydia Leffingwell, widow of Deacon Thomas, made in 1737–8, though not probated until 1763, she leaves to Samuel, "nails, boards &c preparatory for building." It is possible that these materials were designed for the new house, which was built upon this lot, just north of the "Sheltering Arms," either shortly after the making of this will, or perhaps about the time of Samuel's marriage in 1744. We know certainly, that the old house, across the way, had disappeared, and this new one was built, before 1759. The first wife of Samuel Leffingwell was Hannah, daughter of Daniel and Elizabeth (Perkins) Buck of Southington, Ct. She died in 1761, and he married (2) Sarah, daughter of Joseph and Sarah (Paine) Russell of Bristol, R. I.... —Mary E. John Burt, Dec. 10, 1761. —Vital Records of Rhode Island, Vol. 6: Bristol County Births, Marriages, Deaths Capt Samuel Leffingwell 3rd of Norwich and Mrs. Sarah Russel of Bristol were married December 10, 1761.
