Read More	MSGT US AIR FORCE KOREA, VIETNAM AUGUSTA ~ Kenneth V. Tjelmeland passed away unexpectedly in Winslow, Maine on December 4, 2014 at the age of 82. Ken was born in McCallsburg, Iowa on July 18th,1932 the 7th child of Ora and Martin Tjelmeland. He graduated from McCallsburg High School in 1951 and joined the US Air Force in 1952. Ken met his wife Rae at a wedding of friends and later married in October 1955 in Austin Texas. Over the years they had four children. During his 20 years in the Air Force working as an aircraft mechanic, Ken and his family were stationed in Texas, Maine, the Philippines, Upper Michigan, and Florida. Ken also did a tour of duty for a year in Vietnam in 1967 and was in Ben Hoa during the Tet Offensive. He retired as a Senior Master Sergeant from the Air Force in 1972, moved to Augusta, Maine with his family and worked in the United States Post Office for another 20 years. He spent his remaining years living in Augusta enjoying time with his children, grandchildren and wife Rae until her passing In May of this year. Ken and Rae took advantage of their retirement years to travel to Norway and Alaska and over several years beginning in 1995 spent 2-3 months in Phoenix during the winter visiting their daughter and her family and Ken's brother and sister. They enjoyed the warm desert weather and vegetation, continuous activities including golf, swimming, shopping, dancing and the change of scenery. They also loved the coast of Maine and took long trips on their motorcycle or car touring small towns and in the winter went on snowmobile trails all over northern Maine. Ken was a proud member of both the Masons and Shriners. For several years he participated in the Shriners Kora Cart team and traveled throughout Maine for various parades and fairs. He was also a volunteer driver for the VA Hospital. The Prince of Peace Lutheran Church in Augusta was fortunate to have Ken as an active member over the last 42 years. He was always available to help others, served as usher, participated on the Property Committee and cared for the church building and grounds as if it was his home. Ken grew up on a large farm in Iowa and the love of growing garden vegetables stayed with him his entire life. For the 42 years he lived in Augusta he was known for his productive garden which he shared with anyone who knew him. His children and grandchildren will miss his tomatoes, beans, peas and squash. Ken was predeceased by his parents Martin and Ora Tjelmeland, and his siblings Eugene Tjelmeland, Arlet Tjelmeland Bushman, Harlon Tjelmeland, Myron Tjelmeland, Ione Myers and Clifford Tjelmeland and granddaughter Alissa Fannie, Concord, NH. Ken was survived by his daughter Kendra Balazs of Phoenix AZ, her husband Joseph Balazs and her children Hans Balazs and Stefani Balazs of Phoenix AZ; his daughter Kim DeLois-Fannie of Concord, NH and her husband Donald Fannie and their children Matthew DeLois, Heather and her husband Chris Ralphs of Concord, NH, Jessica Cote and husband Marc and children Marc Jr. and Nathan of Oakland, ME; and Kim and Don's grandchildren Maggie, Cassie, Liam and Noah of Concord, NH; his son Kip Tjelmeland of Windsor, Maine and Diane Tjelmeland of South China and their daughters, Sierra Tjelmeland and Savannah Tjelmeland of Windsor, ME; his youngest daughter Kelli DiTullio of Waterville, Maine, Mark DiTullio and children Jacob DiTullio, Barianne DiTullio, Benjamin DiTullio and Juliet DiTullio; his brother Lester Tjelmeland and wife Kathy in Yorba Linda, CA and his sister Beverly Shalley in Mesa, Arizona, Burial with military honors will be held in the chapel of the Maine Veterans Memorial Cemetery, Mount Vernon Road, Augusta. Those wishing to remember Ken may donate in his honor to the Prince of Peace Lutheran Church, Building Fund, 209 Eastern Ave Eastern, Augusta 04330, where he was a long time member of the church.
