Heller of Iola was accidentally killed on September 7 near Manila, Philippine Islands, according to a letters received by his wife who lives at 19 North Third street. Sgt. Heller was a member of the signal section of the Military Police command at Manila. On the day of his death he was in charge of a crew of 30 repairing telephone lines near the city. Heller climbed a telephone pole to make a repair, came in contact with a power line and was instantly killed. He was born at Westphalia, coming to Iola as a young boy with his parents. After completing his schooling Sgt. Heller was employed by the Allen County News Journal and became a linotype operator. From Iola he moved to Neosho Mo., and was employed as a linotype operator on the Neosho Daily Democrate when he enlisted in the army in November, 1942. He was stationed at Camp Crowder, Mo., for two years and was sent overseas about a year ago. He was 28 years old. He leaves his wife and 3 year old daughter, Barbara, at the home; his mother, Mrs. Wm. Heller, 111 South Kentucky; a sister, Mrs. Floyd Butler, Tucson, Arizona, and a brother, Sgt. Frank Heller who is with the armed services in the southwest Pacific. He was buried with full military honors in an army cemetery in Manilia. ----- Iola Register October 13, 1948 pg. 1 Sgt. Heller's Body To Iola for Burial The body of Master Sergeant Ray W. Heller who was killed accidentally on Sept. 7, 1945, near Manila, P.I., will arrive in Iola on the Santa Fe at 9:13 a.m. Friday. It will be met by a military escort provided by the Veterans of Foreign Wars. Sgt. Heller was a member of the signal section of the Military Police command at Manila. On the day of his death he was in charge of a crew of men who were repairing telephone lines. While working on a pole, Heller came in contact with a power line and was electrocuted. Born at Westphalia, Sgt. Heller came to Iola as a young boy with his parents and completed school here. He was employed for a time by the Allen County News Journal as a linotype operator and was working at his trade in Joplin, Mo., when he enlisted in the army in November, 1942. He leaves his wife and daughter, Barbara, who now live at Joplin; his mother, Mrs. Wm. Heller, Iola, his sister, Mrs. Harry Goodrich, Sanford, N.C., a brother Frank Heller, Iola, and niece, Miss Theola Butler, Chillicothe, Mo. Contributor: debilyn
