Muriel Jean Carlson was born November 5, 1929 in Chamberlain, So Dak, the daughter of Fred and Millie (Rundell) Kies. The family moved in South Dakota from Reliance to Hurley in 1939. Read More	Jean Carlson, 87, formerly of Akron, Ia, died Thursday, March 16, 2017, at Hillcrest Mable Rose in Bellevue, Neb. Muriel Jean Carlson was born November 5, 1929 in Chamberlain, So Dak, the daughter of Fred and Millie (Rundell) Kies. The family moved in South Dakota from Reliance to Hurley in 1939. During the war years, the family moved frequently because Fred worked on war effort construction projects. This included the Ellsworth Airbase runway. After graduating as valedictorian from Hurley High School in 1947, she and her sister, Lorine, attended South Dakota State College in Brookings, So Dak. There she met her husband, Dennis C. Carlson, when he gave the two sisters and a friend a ride home for the weekend. She earned an Associate of Science degree. Dennis and Jean married August 14, 1949 in Hurley. When her daughters were small, Jean baked and decorated wedding cakes while the family lived in several communities in Northwest Iowa. She also did polling work for The Gallup Organization. The family moved to Akron, Ia in 1962 where Dennis taught junior high math. Jean began work as the elementary school secretary and aide when her daughter Karen started first grade in 1966. Jean retired in 2002 after working at the school for 36 years. She cared for Dennis from 2003 until his death in 2008. In 2015, Jean moved to assisted living in Bellevue, Neb. Her daughter Linda watched over her carefully in her last months. Jean was an active member of Wesley United Methodist Church and United Methodist Women in Akron. She was the church’s Administrative Board Secretary for many years and held other offices. She was also the secretary for the family reunion, the Rundell Picnic, for many years. Jean used her typing skills to compile both a family history book and a cookbook with favorite recipes to share with her family. She enjoyed her weekly coffee group consisting of ladies from school and friends. Her daughter Gail dubbed them “The Forgetful Club,” because they couldn’t remember when they were going to meet one week. Jean liked to read, sew, knit, bake, garden and play cards with friends. She typed many family biographies for the 2007 Akron quasquicentennial book. If someone needed to have typing done, Jean was willing to do it. She bravely learned to use a Macintosh computer when required for work and gave up using her typewriter there and at home. Jean loved being connected to her family and friends using her computer at home. She lived by the motto, “If it needs to be done, just do it.” Jean lived her Christian faith quietly, through her actions and in 2014 read the entire Bible in one year. She and Dennis funded the Fred and Millie Kies Scholarships given to students in Hurley and baseball scholarships at SDSU. They traveled to wherever their daughters and grandchildren lived including Germany, Panama, Belgium, Texas and New York. While they were “empty nesters,” Jean and Dennis befriended their neighbors, George and Pam Stowe, and sons, Benjamin and Daniel. Jean greatly influenced how Pam raised her children and Dennis introduced the boys to electronics. Her survivors include her three daughters: Linda (LTC (Ret) John L.) Shirk of Bellevue, Neb., Gail (Craig M.) Eichstadt of Pierre, So Dak, and Karen (Richard) Adix of Akron, Ia. She was blessed with nine grandchildren and four great-grandchildren: Paul Shirk and Alan Shirk of Papillion, Neb, Anne (Scott) Saniuk of Omaha, Neb, Neil (Molly Quinn) Eichstadt of Sioux Falls, So Dak, Carl Eichstadt of Pierre, So Dak, Wesley Bonham of Sioux Falls, So Dak, Mikara Bonham of Sioux City, Ia, Arianna Adix & Stanley Adix of Cedar Falls, Ia, Benjamin & Emma Saniuk, and Samuel & Eleanor Eichstadt; a sister, Lorine Kies Carlson, (widow of Dennis’ brother Kenneth) of Hurley, So Dak; a sister-in-law, Gloria Carlson, of Conception Junction, MO; many nieces, nephews, and cousins. She was preceded in death by her husband, Dennis, her parents and an infant brother, Donald Rundell Kies.
