LeVern had four sisters and one brother. He graduated from Kelley Schools and took classes at Iowa State College in Ames, Iowa. His parents were Elmer Roy Halverson and Nettie Matilda Sydnes Halverson. LeVern had four sisters and one brother. He graduated from Kelley Schools and took classes at Iowa State College in Ames, Iowa. He served in the U.S Army during World War II from March 11, 1942 to January 4, 1946, earning the rank of Staff Sergeant. On May 9, 1944, he married Esther Marie Jungmann in Santa Fe, New Mexico. Esther was from Van Meter, Iowa, and was a World War II First Lieutenant Army nurse. Esther served at hospitals in Santa Fe, NM (caring for Manhattan Project patients), a POW camp in East Texas and in Agra, India (home of the Taj Mahal,) from January 20, 1943 to March 4, 1946. After the war, Esther and LeVern returned to Iowa to farm and raised 4 children: Stephen Halverson, Barbara Halverson Westercamp, Craig Halverson, and Mary Halverson Wettach. LeVern worked over 25 years for the State of Iowa at the Capitol Complex as a supervisor. His workers appreciated his caring and thoughtfulness. LeVern and Esther enjoyed living at their farm home, traveling, and being with family and friends. They traveled in many areas of the US, Europe and India and celebrated 50 years of marriage at Yellowstone with K rations. LeVern and Esther were married almost 63 years. LeVern is a life member of the American Legion and the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 788. LeVern is a member of the Lutheran Church in Nevada, Iowa. The last 23 months of his life he attended The King of Glory Lutheran Church in Dallas, TX. LeVern's son Craig and his wife Colleen and granddaughters, Christan and Catherine opened their hearts and home to him and he lived with them in Dallas for about 2 years. Le Vern enjoyed going to major league baseball games and he was a fan of the Detroit Tigers. LeVern was proud to have played basketball for the Kelley Red Devils while in high school and he continued his love for sports through out his life. LeVern is survived by his sister Hazel Irene Alleman; his 4 children: Steve (Maradith) of Nevada, Iowa, Barbara (Keith) Westercamp of Cedar Rapids, Iowa, Craig (Colleen) of Dallas Texas and Mary (Steve) Wettach of Mt. Pleasant, Iowa; 11 grandchildren and 2 great grandchildren. LeVern is now home with his beloved wife Esther. LeVern was a very special person, loved by many , whose kind and thoughtful ways will be greatly missed.
