He was born Dec. 26, 1917, in Ames to John and Minnie (Harms) Hansen. He attended District 68 Grade School and graduated from Ames High School. He worked for DeKalb Seed Co. in 1940 and 1941. He joined the U.S. Coast Guard and served from Feb. 17, 1941, to Feb. 18, 1946, during World War II. He served on the Greenland Patrol from 1941 to 1943, chasing German subs, building radio bases and destroying German radio bases. He transferred to the USS LST 790 in the South Pacific and was in the invasion of the Philippine Islands and Iwo Jima, Okinawa and into Tokyo. After his discharge, he returned home and bought a farm north of Ames where he farmed until retiring in 1980. He joined the U.S. Navy Reserves and served until 1977 as chief petty officer. He married Wilma J. Just on March 12, 1950, in Fremont. He was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church in Fremont, Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 854 and American Legion Post 20 of Fremont. He also was a member of Elkhorn Valley Golf Club at Hooper and Fremont Rod & Gun Club. He was a member and past president of the Ames School District. He was an avid bowler. He was named an Honorary Admiral of the Great State of Nebraska. Survivors include: his wife, Wilma; two daughters, Sandra (and husband, Michael) Ciaccio of Houston and Sheryl (and husband, Brad) Walter; and two grandchildren, Gregory Ciaccio and Leigh Walter. He was preceded in death by his parents; a brother, Victor Hansen; and a sister, Mabel Lueders. The Rev. Dan Heuer will officiate Friday's service. Visitation will be from 2-8 p.m. Thursday and 9-11 a.m. Friday at Moser Memorial Chapel in Fremont. Visitation will continue one hour prior to service time Friday at the church. Burial will be in Memorial Cemetery in Fremont with military graveside services conducted by the Fremont Honor Guard of VFW Post 854 and American Legion Post 20. Memorials have been established to Trinity Lutheran Church and American Legion Post 20.
