Description	:	Murtle D. Graves was the son of Dorphus D. Graves and Malinda Hawley, born on June 13, 1869. His siblings were: Mary-died March 24, 1894; Jessie-died June 3, 1941; Walter-died November 24, 1933; Calvin; and Leonard. In 1881, Dorphus Graves bought 160 acres and broke the first sod and farmed it with with his older son in Audubon County. Malinda Graves moved with her remaining four children from near Delta, Keokuk County, Iowa to Audubon County, Douglas Township #1 on February 8, 1882. Dorphus Graves died on June 11, 1889 and his wife and children continued farming until they all married. Murtle Graves worked for Mr. and Mrs. John Wagner, and that was one of the families for which Minnie M. Berg did housework. Murtle and Minnie were married on Febraury 19, 1896 , at the home of A.H. Aldrich on Washington Street in Audubon. The ceremony was performed by Rev. B.B. Blaylock of Kansas. (Mr. Blaylock was in Audubon holding revival meetings). After a few years, Malinda, Murtle's mother, rented the farm to Myrtle. Eventually, Murtle and Minnie bought the farm. The house was small--two rooms upstairs and two rooms downstairs. The Graves became the parents of eight children, the first 5 born in Douglas Township of Audubon County, IA, and the last 3 born in Audubon, Leroy Township Aud. Co., IA: Lewis Dorphus Graves (b. 8 Mar 1897, d. 29 May 1926 San Fernando, Los Angeles Co., CA); Mildred Irene Graves (b.6 Mar 1899, D. 1996 Des Moines, Boone Co., IA, married __Barrett); Beatrice Gertrude Graves (b.31 Jan 1901, d.18 Aug.1901 Douglas Twsp, Aud. Co., IA); Lyle Elmo Graves (b. 9 May 1903, d. 3 May 1961); Clarence William Graves (b.9 Apr 1907, d. 8 June 1985 Lake City, Calhoun Co., IA); Alma Marie(b. 18 Apr 1909, d. 24 July 2006 Tucson, Pima Co., AZ, m.___Roberts); Alice Malinda Graves (b. 3 Jan 1911, died South Carolina, m.___Short); and Donald Graves, b.c.1914. Murtle and Minnie farmed in Douglas Township until they retired and moved to Audubon in 1927. The Graves sold their farm to L.J. Anderson, then later he sold it to the Blohm family. Murtle Graves died on November 14, 1955, holding the claim to fame as the oldest patron of the Audubon Post Office, having received mail since 1882.
