Myra raised her family alone after the unfortunate young death of her husband in the TB epidemic. She was raised on a large family farm near Hampton, Iowa, the youngest daughter of Orson Gideon Reeve and Sarah Parks of Jo Daviess County, Ill. Both sides of her family had been pioneers who came from the east and faced incredible hardships to settle their townships and build up their farms, churches, schools and governments. The Historical Society in Hampton has a large display of military items from the James Baldwin Reeve family (her grandparents), and even the whale oil lamp they brought across from Ohio on their horse drawn wagon. The DAR maintains the Reeve brick home, and the original schoolhouse still stands in the Reeve Township. James B. Reeve had been the first pioneer, first judge and organizer of the township. He was called as company captain to take his troops to fight in the Civil War, and died in Fort Pillow, Tenn. The children had to take up where he left off. James' granddaughter Myra went to college at a time when only the most prosperous families could afford to educate their girls, indicating how important education was in this family. She lived in the Lakota house during college, and was a member of the literary club. She became a teacher, and somehow met Bert McNitt. They were married where he was raised and had become a building contractor in Winona, Minn. They moved to Mason City, where their children were born. Although Bert passed away early, and this occurred during the Great Depression, all of the children were well educated and ended up in good careers. I (Ruth) know Myra only as my grandma in her later years, and from the perspective of a grandchild. I remember how she knitted and crocheted beautifully, and made newborn outfits for every baby born in our church. I remember sitting with my arms up holding yarn while she wound skeins into balls for knitting. She sewed beautifully, and taught all of her girls to sew. She helped me (Ruth) to sew outfits for my dolls, and I was always delighted that she cared enough to take the time to work with me. Every Christmas, she made her special suet pudding with that perfect sauce. If we picked the berries, she would bake us scrumptious pies. Actually, she won so many blue ribbons at the Iowa State Fair for her baking that they finally asked her politely to give someone else a chance. She encouraged us to read, and would send us to school with money for our Scholastic book orders. Every day we played Canasta, good for learning math. We went on many trips to the library and would eat at Sears cafeteria. Grandma loved going on trips to visit friends and relatives, so we went along after she came to live with us. We went most often to Mason City to visit her son Reeve, wife Rita and grandsons Michael and Tommy, and to Geneva to visit her sister, Aunt Adell and Uncle Lee Johnson, and others in that town. Most holidays were spent at relatives. She used to ride on the bus to go visit friends, and took Donna along when she wasn't old enough to be in school yet. Donna remembers how much fun they had taking the bus to visit her college friends in Pella, Iowa. Grandma had a way of making everyone feel special, looking for the good in every situation, and was the kindest grandmother anyone could hope for.
