Among the men who have been largely instrumental in developing and advancing the opulent natural resources of Marshall county and who have been instrumental in promoting the public welfare is the well known farmer of Washington township whose name introduces this sketch. It is most consonant that in this compilation mention be made of those sterling pioneers who have done so much for the upbuilding of this section of the state, in the majority of instances being compelled to endure the vicissitudes which usually attend those who form the advance guard of civilization in a new country, as did the parents of the subject, and he himself grew up amid pioneer conditions and has spent his busy and useful life in his native community. Time and prolific enterprise have wrought wonderful changes in this section of the state since M. B. Capron first saw the light of day and the great section has been brought forward to the high plane which is marked in the older localities of the Union. Mr. Capron was born in the community where he now resides on December 16, 1866, and here he grew to manhood and received a good education in the local schools and, starting to work on the home farm when a boy, he has always devoted his life to agricultural pursuits. He is the son of G. F. and Clara (Bagley) Capron, the father born in Ohio in 1837, and died in State Center township, this county, May 25, 1909. The mother, who was born in Pennsylvania in 1837, died here in August, 1900. They grew to maturity in the East, were educated and married there, and came to Marshall county, Iowa, in 1865 and secured many of its choicest acres, which they improved from the wild state and on which they established a good home and became popular among the early settlers. They were the parents of two children, M. B., of this review, and John, who was born on February 3, 1876, and who is now residing in Des Moines. M. B. Capron was married on November 25, 1889, to Agnes Meade, who was born in Ohio, November 3, 1866, and died November 11, 1904. She was a woman of many praiseworthy characteristics and had a host of friends. Her parents were early settlers of Marshall county and were highly respected. To this union one daughter and two sons were born, namely: Lyle, born September 12, 1894; Mabel Clara, born June 13, 1897; Dwight, born July 10, 1899. They were all born in Washington township and they are at present attending the public schools in the community. Mr. Capron was again married on June 21, 1905, to Bertha Wyatt, who was born in this township, August 19, 1862, and here she grew to maturity and received a good education. She comes of an excellent old pioneer family, being the daughter of Edward McCrae and Isabella (Smith) Wyatt, the father born in Farmerville, Ontario, Canada, in 1830 and died in 1900; the mother was born in 1840 and died in 1904. These parents were early settlers of Marshall county, Iowa, and they became well fixed here. Their family consisted of six daughters and three sons, as follows: Ezra died in infancy; William Frederick died in October, 1910; Bertha, wife of Mr. Capron, of this review; Sarah R. Allen is residing in Marshalltown; Janette Maxey is residing in Des Moines; Charles is living on the old homestead in Washington township; Mary Viola Payne lives at Rochester, Minnesota; Agnes Gertrude Crary lives at Bentley, North Dakota; Cyntha Amelia Deming lives near Rhodes. These children were all well educated and they are well situated in life, each reﬂecting the wholesome home atmosphere in which they were reared. five of the daughters as well as the father were school teachers in Marshall county. Mrs. Capron is a lady of education, intelligence and refinement, and one of the best known school teachers in the county, having taught eighty terms of school. Besides the rural work, she has taught in Marshalltown and Sioux City, ten years in the latter, seven years in the same room. She has a remarkable record as a teacher and owing to her high grade work her services have always been in great demand, she being popular with both patrons and pupils. Politically, Mr. Capron is a Republican, and he has been school director. Mrs. Capron is a member of the Methodist Episcopal church at Melbourne. They are a very energetic couple and they have one of the choice farms and attractive homes of the county, he owning two hundred acres and she eighty acres, both in Washington township, all well improved and under a high state of cultivation. They have a beautiful home, elegantly furnished with a piano, a large library of carefully selected volumes, fine paintings, etc., everything denoting good taste and refinement. Most farmers in Marshall county give their farm a name. Mr. Capron has his farm recorded under the name of Maple Grove Stock Farm. They keep well abreast of the times on all subjects and are familiar with the world's best literature. They are popular with the best social circles of the county and number their friends only by the limits of their acquaintance. --"Past and Present of Marshall County, Iowa" 1912.
