Myron Orval Hammer was born February 4, 1952 to Alice Marie (Dobberpuhl) and Orval Hammer in Aberdeen, SD. He was the youngest of three sons. He attended school in Brentford up until his last two years when he attended Northville and was a member of the last graduating class in 1970. Upon graduating high school, Myron attended South Dakota School of Mines and Technology in Rapid City earning a mechanical engineering degree. Myron’s true passion was farming. He came home during college summers to work on the farm and returned permanently after graduation to farm near Brentford, SD with his father. Together they raised sheep and crops. Myron married his true love, Ethel Gange on November 20, 1976 at the Methodist Church in Mellette, SD. They had two daughters, Nicole and Jessica. Myron loved Mother Nature and it showed through his hobbies and the things he enjoyed most. Myron enjoyed feeding birds, bird watching and identifying birds by the tunes they sang. He was a lover of all animals, but dogs held a special spot in his heart. Throughout his life, he always had a dog companion by his side. Flying was also one of his hobbies. Many calm evenings were spent flying model airplanes or flying ultralights that his dad and him built. There has always been a garden at the Hammer farm. Myron learned at a young age how to grow great produce and shared that with his daughters. They spent a lot of time working side by side in the dirt. Riding motorcycle was one of his favorite things to do. It all started with a 1958 Panhead Harley Davidson and through the years and a few bikes along the way, he most recently enjoyed the easy-riding of his latest, Spyder motorcycle. He enjoyed supper-rides with friends and neighbors and especially going for rides with his daughters and sons-in-law. It really didn’t matter who was cruising along with them, as long as Ethel was on the back of his motorcycle. Saying that Myron was social is an understatement. Myron loved spending time visiting with friends and making memories with family. He looked forward to running into people he knew in town and always greeted everyone with a big smile, a hand shake and of course a joke. He enjoyed telling and listening to stories, and he never forgot a joke or a conversation. Myron was delighted when he could share his knowledge or passion for something with others. Myron taught many neighbor boys how to fly model airplanes, answered many bird questions and gave farming advice when asked. Most of all, he passed on his calm and positive outlook on life to everyone he met. He always found the good in everything and everybody. He was always willing to help others however and whenever they needed it. Myron was proud, giving and full of love. He and Ethel displayed a one-of-a kind love and had so much fun and shared so much laughter together. They would have celebrated their 40th wedding anniversary this year. Myron was proud of the farm they had built and the life they had created together. His daughters were the light of his life. Myron told them daily how proud he was of them and how much he loved them. Seeing them happy, made him happy. Myron was excited when he gained two sons-in-law. Having daughters, he was sometimes limited when it came to “guy-things”. He was excited to have someone to appreciate his jokes and to do guy stuff with. Myron loved when he could hang out with the boys and have a fish fry. Kyle and Brad relieved a father’s worry, as he was thankful to know that his daughters would be loved and cared for by two great men. Myron enjoyed and was proud to farm with them. He was happy the family farm could keep going strong. Myron is survived by his wife Ethel; daughters Nicole (Kyle) Henjum and Jessica (Brad) Henjum; brother Marvin (Karel) Hammer; sisters-in-law Betty (Jerry) Akin and Doris (Paul) Schmidt; many nieces and nephews and his faithful pets Star and Sam.
