Smith Is Stricken; Prominent Grinnell Business Man Dies Saturday Evening From Heart Failure; Funeral Services Will Be Friday At 2:00 From Home; Mr. Smith Closed His Store Saturday Night and Seemed in His Usual Health; M. O. Smith was stricken suddenly with heart trouble Saturday evening at about 10:30 o'clock and passed away within a few minutes at his home at 1103 Broad Street. He had closed the furniture store only a few minutes previously and had seemed in the best of health. Funeral services will be held Friday afternoon at 2::00 o'clock from the Smith home at 1103 Broad Street. Burial will be at Baxter. The funeral plan were delayed until the latter part of the week for the arrival of the children from California. Myron Orville Smith was the son of Mr. and Mrs. Cassius Marshall Smith. He was born in Kirkwood, Ill. His father died when he was two years of age and he went with is mother and brother to live with relatives at Greenwich, N.Y. Seven years later his mother remarried and the family returned to Illinois, later locating on a farm in Montgomery County, Iowa. Still later the family moved to Red Oak, where Mr. Smith attended public school. As a very young man he was associated with John Swope of Red oak in the furniture business and continued in the furniture business at Red Oal for about 20 years. He was first married to Miss Hattie Frame. To them wer born three sons: Marshall LaMar and Oliver Glenn Smith, both of Long Beach, California, and Orville Dale Smith who has been engaged in business with his father. The mother of these sons met a tragic death in 1897 from burns caused by the explosion of a gasoline stove. In 1901 he was married to Miss Sadie Jontz of Baxter, Iowa. To this union was born one daughter, Mrs. Ward Hakes of Martinsdale, Iowa. Mr. Smith had seven grandchildren, six boys and 1 girl. One grandson, James Harold Smith has lived with his grandparents since the death of his mother some years ago. Mr. Smith was a member of the Methodist church, a regular attendant at the session of R. G. Coutts' Sunday School class, a member of the Elks lodge, the Yoeman lodge and of the Ben Hurr Insurance association. After his business experience in Red Oak Mr. Smith purchased a half interest in a furniture business in indianola. The firm name was Proudfoot and Smith. That business association continued for something like four years when he went to California for a year. He then returned to Red Oak and purchased an exclusively undertaking business. In August 1925 the Smith Furniture Company purchased the business on Broad St. formerly owned and conducted by C. A. Mellott and here Mr. Smith and his son O. Dale Smith have since been engaged in business. Mr. Smith has made a place for himself in the business and social life of Grinnell and has been prominent in a number of community activities. He was a friendly man, careful in his business, and will be missed. Myron Orville Smith was buried in Baxter, Poweshiek, Iowa but don't know which cemetery.
