Description	:	Myron W. Hawkins, 89, of Sioux Falls, SD, formerly of Plankinton, SD, passed away Tuesday, December 20, 2011 at The Inn on Westport in Sioux Falls. Funeral Services will be 10:30 A.M. Friday, December 23, 2011 at the United Methodist Church in Plankinton. A Committal Service will follow at Mizpah Cemetery with military honors preformed by VFW Aurora County Post #6554. Myron (Mike) Wayne Hawkins was born on April 17, 1922 to Louis J. Hawkins and Vivian (Edinger) Hawkins in Aurora County, South Dakota. He grew up on the family farm homesteaded by his grandfather, Albert Edinger and attended rural school in Cooper Township. He then attended White Lake and Plankinton High Schools, graduating from Plankinton High School in 1940. He attended the School of Mines in Rapid City until entering the Navy in 1945 during WWII. His Naval service included basic training at Great Lakes Naval Training Station in Chicago and serving mainly on an LST ship transporting Japanese prisoners back to Japan. He was honorably discharged in 1946 and then engaged in custom combining along the Hwy. 281 corridor from Canada to Texas and began farming and ranching in Cooper Township on the family farm in the late 1940's along with his father and brother, John (Jack). After his brothers' sudden death, he began the farming operation on his own. On October 26, 1950, he married Joyce E. Folan Dewey in a double wedding ceremony in Mitchell, SD with Bill and Ruth Folan, Joyce's brother. Besides being married in this double ceremony, Bill and Ruth were some of their dearest friends. Myron was a member of the Plankinton United Methodist Church, a life time member and past Commander of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 6554 of Plankinton, SD, member and past Master of the Masonic Lodge in White Lake and Plankinton, served as Aurora County Commissioner for 4 years, Cooper Township treasurer for over 26 years, and member of Plankinton Township board for many years. He also was a Democratic Precinct Committeeman for many years. He was very proud of his military and civic service and extremely patriotic, serving in the VFW Color Guard for over 50 years participating in funerals, parades, Veterans Day activities, Memorial Day services, Loyalty Day observances and other patriotic activities. Raising and feeding cattle, farming, and related endeavors were a true love and brought great satisfaction to him. He also enjoyed pheasant hunting, deer hunting, fishing, horse racing, and Saturday nights in town with friends as well as family gatherings. The union of Myron and Joyce joined Joyce's children, Ron, Marilyn, Eugene, and Karen along with their 3 daughters, Cherri, Sandra, and Kathy. Myron and Joyce lived on the family farm northwest of Plankinton from 1951 to 1985 and then they purchased a farm closer to Plankinton in Plankinton Township. He remained on the farm until Alzheimer 's disease forced Mike to move to Sioux Falls in late 2007. In 2008, he became a resident of the Inn on Westport in Sioux Falls where he remained until his death. He is survived by his children, Cherri (Chuck) Robertson, Sandy (Fred) Hohn, Kathy (Terry) Koch, Karen (Ken) Hohbach, all of Sioux Falls, Marilyn Woodraska of Oacoma, SD and Ron (Rheata) Dewey of Redmond, Oregon. He is also survived by 19 grandchildren, 36 great grandchildren, and 9 great great grandchildren, as well as many nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. He was preceded in death by his wife, Joyce (1998), an infant son, his parents, his brother John, his sister Evelyn Crockett and brother-in-law Francis Crockett, son Eugene Dewey, and grandson R. J. Pearson.
