BERKHEISER, 81, Rochester, co-founder of one of the first self-serve grocery stores in Northern Indiana, died at 6:05 a.m. today in Life Care Center, Rochester. He had been ill for one year. He and his wife Helen lived at 1031 E. Ninth St., having moved from their longtime farm home on Bessmore Park Road just south of White Creek. Mr. Berkneiser ended a 46-year career in the grocery business with his retirement in December 1972. He had worked for A&P and Kroger's in Rochestr and for Kroger's in Bremen before opening his own store on Main Street. In December 1947 he co-founded [BERKWAY with Conde HOLLOWAY] the IGA Foodliner at Ninth Street and Wabash Avenue that was the first business building in the Manitou Heights subdivision of the city. Now Townsend's IGA, the store was the first "drive-up" grocery in the area, with ample off-street parking for customers. Mr. Berkheiser found time for many community activities. He was recognized for those with the Rochester Chamber of Commerce Community Service Award in 1981. His wife was named co-recipient, marking the first time two people had shared the award. Mr. Berkheiser was a Sunday School teacher at Trinity United Methodist Church for 25 years, a two-time president of the Rochester Kiwanis Club, a founding director of the Rochester School Building Corp., which was the holding company for constructing the present Columbia and Riddle elementary schools, a former president of the Woodlawn Hospital Board of Trustees, a former president of the Fulton County United Way and a former member of the Fulton County 4-H Extension Board, the Fulton County 4-H Fair Board and the RSVP Board of Directors. He was a member of the Masonic Blue Lodge, the Odd Fellows Lodge, the Disabled American Veterans, Trinity United Methodist Church, the Fulton County Council on Aging and the AARP. Mr. Berkheiser was born Dec. 23, 1908 in Rochester to Merrit and Alta WAGONER BERKHEISER and was a lifetime resident of the community except for five years as manager of the Bremen Kroger store. He was married June 26, 1932 in South Bend to Helen M. CHAMBERLAIN, who survives. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II, receiving a Purple Heart for wounds suffered during the invasion of Normandy. Surviving with the wife are a daughter, Nancy Sue BERKHEISER, Fort Wayne, and a brother, Herschel BERKHEISER, Palo Alto, Calif. Services will be at 2 p.m. Sunday in Trinity United Methodist Church with the Rev. Donald BOWMAN officiating. Burial will be in the Rochester I.O.O.F. Cemetery. Friends may call at the Zimmerman Brothers Funeral Home, Rochester, from 2 to 8 p.m. Saturday, and at the church after 1 p.m. Sunday.
