According to her husband Harry's obituary, her name was Myrta Briggs. Their marriage license dated March 5, 1926, identified her as a widow, Myrtle Ann Briggs. Her maiden name was Wickham and her parents were identified as William Wickham and Jennie Phillis. Rev. William C. Cleworth of the Methodist Church performed the marriage, which was witnessed by Mrs. Cleworth and a Mrs. E.A. Kirchberger. Harry's brother Herbert served as witness to the marriage license application. Myrtle's place of birth was listed as Ohio and it noted she would be 36 on her next birthday. That would indicate a birth year of either 1890 or 1891 and Riverside Cemetery records have listed 1890. However... Her death certificate listed Feb. 6, 1881 as the birth date. She died of "lung cancer (?)" according to the attending physician Dr. R.S. Grossman. Her residence was 707 S. 2nd St., but she died at 105 S. 9th St. In the 1930 Federal Census records Myrta's age is listed as 40, indicating the 1890 birth year, but in the 1940 Census her age is 59, meaning the 1881 year is correct. Further searches have found an Illinois marriage license for Seymour S. Briggs and Myrta A. Wickham dated Dec. 19, 1898. Myrta's age is listed as 17, and the estimated birth year is 1881. The listed parents are Jacob W. Wickham and Louisa J. Phelles. The names of William and Jennie from the second marriage license can be seen in the middle initials of W. and J. As is often the case Phelles and Phillis could be excused as a misspelling or misreading the handwritten documents. Seymour S. Briggs is also buried in Riverside Cemetery. He died in 1926, the same year Myrta and Harry married in early March. Harry and Myrtle/Myrta had no children prior to or with each other. Myrta is a variant of the name Myrtle, coming into use in 1880-1890 according to thinkbabynames.com. It is a "botanical and nature name based on the evergreen shrub that was sacred to Venus as a symbol of love". In the 1947 Marshalltown City Directory she is listed as Myrta A. Dodd. Also listed in the directory at the same address is Harriet Dodd, widow of Mark and Harry's mother. Apparently Harriet was living with them during that time which was just prior to Harry's death although his 1948 obituary identifies her as living in Wisconsin. The search continues...
