Read More	Decatur County Journal Leon, Iowa Thursday, June 28, 1917 Little Myrta Ellen Baker, the little daughter of Melissa Honn Baker was accidentally shot last Thursday morning about 9 o'clock and died that afternoon about 1:30 o'clock at the age of 4 years, ten months and 3 days. The child with her two little sisters Veta and Ruth were in the house while the mother with her son Lloyd and daughter Madge were out working in the fields. Little Myrta, not yet 5 years old, was playing with some cards on the floor when one of her sisters started to make a bed in the room. A loaded shotgun standing against the wall near the bed was knocked over and when it struck the floor it discharged the load striking the child in the face. The other children summoned their mother and the neighbors were there in a few minutes. A Dr. C. H . Mitchell was summoned but the injuries of the child were to great. The child's father, Joseph Woodard Baker, fell from a haystack about 5 years ago striking a pitch fork and receiving injuries from which he died a short time later. The mother has since been making the living for her children and herself and paying for the little farm upon which they live. Little Myrta leaves to mourn her loss her mother, four sisters Essie, Madge, Veta and Ruth and one brother Lloyd. The funeral was held at Bethel Church Friday, the service being conducted by Rev. Henry Esch Pastor of the Leon Christian Church. Interment was in the Bethel Cemetery.
