Read More	Mrs. Myrtle Griggs, 48, well known in Mt. Pleasant and Henry county, and deputy county recorder, was killed almost instantly about 12:30 today when struck by a car driven by C. E. Dusenberry of southwest of Mt. Pleasant. She was attempting to cross the street at the southeast corner of the square and while doing so apparently became confused and walked directly in the path of the Dusenberry car. She was knocked to the pavement near the curbing on the south side of Washington Street and the west side of Main, in front of the Standard Oil station. The right-hand front wheel caught her foot, and she was thrown to the pavement. The car was stopped immediately with the back wheel on her legs and it was necessary to move the car before she could be carried from the street to the Standard Oil station. Two physicians, Dr. Sternbert and Dr. Lessenger, rushed to the scene at once to administer first aid, but life was extinct within a few seconds after they arrived. Death was due to a broken neck and two broken ribs over her heart, either of which alone might have caused the death, according to the physicians. The ambulance arrived immediately, but no effort was made to remove her to the hospital. For death followed too closely after the accident. Dusenberry, driving a Chevrolet coach had approached the intersection from the north and intended to go on south, on the pavement of 161 enroute home; with him was his mother-in-law, Mrs. Mary Holley, and Bet Hingston, the latter expecting to accompany Dusenberry home to look at some live stock. As they came up to the intersection, the car was stopped, according to witnesses, to let a car driven by Deputy Sheriff, Harold Monger, who was coming in from the south, turn west. After Monger had driven in front of the Dusenberry car and waved a greeting as he passed, he went on West, obtained some gasoline, and drove on home unaware of he accident which had occurred just after he had passed. ON WAY TO LUNCH Mrs. Griggs, who had just left the court house and was enroute home to lunch, was standing on the sidewalk at the southeast of the intersection as Monger passed, he states. Immediately after he had gone by the crossing, she evidently started towards the park and just as Dusenberry started in through the intersection, which is governed at percent by a caution light only as the stop and go lights are out of commission because of a break, in the mechanism. She had reached a point near the signal light post. Whether she became confused as she saw he approaching Dusenberry car or whether she never saw the car at all and suddenly recalled that she should, for some reason continue up the south side of the square instead of going thru the park, will probably never be known. As she neared the caution signal, nevertheless, she suddenly turned and started towards the southwest to the walk at the northeast of the Standard Oil station. Dusenberry swerved his car which was equipped with chains preparatory to going onto the country roads. In an attempt to avoid striking her, but the efforts were futile and before he could stop, she was knocked to the pavement within a few feet of the walk and near the electrolier on the corner. Dr. Lessenger was at the office of Attorney R. S. Finley and as remarks were passed that it was lunch time. Attorney Finley glanced out of the window and saw the accident just as it was over. Dr. Lessenger went to the scene immediately and even after that brief time. Mrs. Griggs lived only a few seconds after he arrived. COUNTY OFFICIAL Mrs. Griggs was one of the county’s best-known women, having served in an official capacity as deputy county recorder, under Mrs. Ina Bennett. She took up her duties in the court house in 1919. She was a courteous and capable deputy and being of an unusually cheerful and congenial nature won many friends while employed there. Prior to 1919 she was employed for ten years at the Hoaglin department store where daily she met and served the public in the same courteous manner that had won her so many friends while at the court house. Parents prostate by tragedy Mrs. Griggs make her home with her parents, Mrs. And Mrs. S. O. Long, 309 West Saunders street and when word of the tragedy was taken to the broken home by friends, the noon day meal was on the table awaiting the arrival of Mrs. Griggs. Great preparations and joy were in the home today as Robert Griggs, only son of Mrs. Griggs, had sent a message from Rockford, Ill., a few hours before saying that he would arrive here this afternoon about three o’clock for a short visit with home folks and his wife, who has been spending the past two weeks at the Long Home, and who would then return to Rockford with him in a day or two. News of the tragedy cause panic in the home. Mrs. Long, mother of Mrs. Griggs, is prostrated and under the care of a physician while Mr. Long, aged father is grief stricken. The home life of the Long’s with the presence of their only daughter, Myrtle, has long been a happy one. Congeniality and love were ever abiding there and the three lived for one another, and for Mrs. Griggs only son, Robert and his wife. Attempts were made to locate Robert enroute, but up to two o’clock no message had reached him and he is no doubt speeding home with many thoughts of a happy meeting with his mother when he arrives. Those surviving this terrible tragedy which has brought sadness to the entire city, are Mr. and Mrs. S. O. Long, aged parents, and one son, Robert of Rockford, Illinois. County Coroner Crane stated this afternoon that as far as is known, there will be no inquest as the accident was unquestionably and unavoidable one.
