Myrtle was born in her Grandparents sod-house farm home, north of Bayard, NE on October 7, 1916. She attended elementary schools at Lake Minatare and Nine Mile. Myrtle attended Gering High School through the 10th grade. She graduated from the American Correspondence High School prior to completing LPN nurse's training in Denver, CO. As a young lady, Myrtle was more comfortable following a team of horses working in her father's field or riding horse in the hills above the Nine Mile community to get the cows than she was helping her mother in the home. She continued working in the fields trading horses for a tractor helping Bob.It was at Nine Mile School that she met Robert Russell and he courted her until they married in Kimball, NE, on October 19, 1935. To this marriage two sons were born. For the first two years, Bob and Myrtle worked for several farmers in the area, picking corn, feeding cattle, and other work opportunities. In the fall of 1938, the family moved to a farm southwest of Gering. This farm on Cedar Canyon Road was to be their home for the next 55 years where she kept house and made a family home in several of the farm buildings. The first was a single room white granary with sheep on one side of them and sheep feed on the other. Next was a one room larger building known as the "shack." A two room small home was purchased and moved to the farm to become their third home. When Bob took over the farm, the 4 room house became their home. In 1993, they moved to their north farm on Roubidoux Road where they resided until June 5, 2011 when they moved into Gering to be with family. The Gering Valley was to be home to Myrtle for over 76 1/2 years. On July 11, 1986, they lost their son Roger. She mourned this loss for the rest of her life. Myrtle loved caring for people. Friends and family were constantly on her mind and she dearly loved her nursing, which she balanced her time between her nurse and supporting her husband's farming. Over the years, because of her loving and compassionate spirit, many of her nieces, nephews, and grandchildren found themselves staying in her home. Additionally Myrtle provided care for several of her aunts, uncles, and friends in their final days of life. Myrtle was active in community activities. She was member of ladies club, co-produced a Dome Rock community play, and was an active member of the Minatare Seventh-day Adventist Church. Myrtle & Bob celebrated 75 years of marriage October 19, 2011. Family and friends honored them with a reception at the Gering Civic Center. Preceding Myrtle's death were her husband Bob, her parents, and two sisters, LaVere Hodges and Margie Koch, and son Roger.
