Description	:	Myrtle Jacobson Phillips, 81, of Cedar Rapids, formerly of Decorah, died Tuesday, Nov. 1, 20056, at the ManorCare Health Services in Cedar Rapids, following a lengthy illness. Funeral services were Nov. 5, 2005, at 11 a.m. at Big Canoe Lutheran Church, with the Rev. David H. Andreae officiating. Casketbearers were her grandchildren: Wesley Jacobson, Eric Jacobson, Jim Jacobson, Scott Jacobson, Dave Mattison, Jon Hostetter, Mark Larson, Jay Larson, Don Witman, Loren Jacobson and Dan deNeui. Fjelstull Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements. Myrtle Ellen Jacobson Phillips was born June 27, 1914 in Decorah, the daughter of Lars and Ida (Lien) Sorenson. Her father immigrated to the United States from Norway in 1891 at the age of 20. She was baptized and confirmed at Canoe Ridge Lutheran Church, rural Decorah. After graduating from Decorah High School, she taught at several Winneshiek County country schools for a few years, including Sattre and Dobney schools in Pleasant Township. She was united in marriage with Emmet Raymond Jacobson Feb. 16, 1936 at Glenwood Lutheran Church, rural Decorah. This marriage was blessed with five children: Duane, Lyle, Marlys, Rodney and Lemoyne. They lived and farmed on the Jacobson home farm in Pleasant Township. He died unexpectedly in a car accident Nov. 17, 1953. She moved to Decorah in 1964, and worked at Luther College, Decorah Greenhouse and Decorah City Hall with the Police Department and later in the City Clerk's office from which she retired in 1979 after 15 years of service. Jan. 31, 1976, she married Thomas Edwin Philips at Big Canoe Lutheran Church, rural Decorah. They had a very active life together as they both loved to garden, fish, dance, play cards and just have fun. They both also had a great love for the Lord. He preceded her in death Feb. 23, 2003. Survivors include her children, Duane and his wife Wanda (Erickson) Jacobson of Belvidere, Ill., Lyle and his wife Delores "Babe" (Odden) Jacobson of Baldwin, Wis., Marlys Larson of Marion, Rodney and his wife Mary ( Quandahl ) Jacobson of Toddville, Lemoyne and his wife Elaine (Larson) Jacobson of El Cajon, Calif.; two step-sons, Tom (Mary) Philips Jr. of Victoria, Tex., and Bob (Mary) Philips of Nashua; 13 grandchildren; 21 great grandchildren; one great-great granddaughter; five step-grandchildren; eight step-great-grandchildren; two sisters-in-law: Eileen (Sandy) Sorenson of Grants Pass, Ore., and Margaret Sorenson of Decorah; and many nieces, nephews and friends. She was preceded in death by her parents; her two husbands, Emmet R. Jacobson and Thomas E. Philips; one sister, Selma Hotvedt; four brothers, Glen, Leonard, Willard and Edwin Sorenson; three grandchildren, Randy Hovey, Larry Jacobson and a baby boy Jacobson and a son-in-law, David Larson.
