Funeral services will be held 10:30 a.m. Saturday, August 6, 2011 at the Vertin-Munson Funeral Home, 503 3rd Ave. N., in Wahpeton, ND. Myrtle Genevieve was born to Fred and Anna (Gaude) Johnson on July 3, 1912, in Red Path Twp., Traverse County, Minnesota. Myrtle was the eldest of eight sisters and two brothers. Surviving sisters are Elna Majors of Vancouver, WA, Beatrice Besel of Redmond, OR, and Margret Sanders of Greenville, TN. The family moved near White Rock, SD where 16 year old Myrtle worked as a waitress in 1928. Myrtle earned her license from the Chicago Hairdressing School in Fargo, ND. Myrtle married Louis Britton Griggs in Wahpeton, ND on December 27, 1933. They lived in Fairmount, ND, working at the Cudahay Company until moving to Redmond, Oregon in December of 1941 with three children: Merrill, Eunice and Beverly. They returned to Fairmount in 1943 where they bought a house and made their home. Their fourth child, Warren, was born in 1945. Myrtle and Louie were instrumental in starting the medical clinic and senior citizen center in Fairmount. They later moved to a farm near Rosholt, SD where they hauled gravel and maintained Lamar Township roads. Returning to Fairmount, they enjoyed snowmobiling, fishing and gardening. Myrtle was known to say her longevity was due to the home-grown grape juice she canned every fall. Myrtle moved to the Frazee Care Center in September of 2006, where she remained until the time of her passing. She will be lovingly remembered by her family: the late Merrill Griggs and Marlys' children: Malane (Dean) Brandenburger of Rosholt, SD, Millicent (James) Ham of Fergas Falls, MN; her daughter, Eunice (Jim) Clarey of Frazee, MN and grandchildren: James Louis (Jane) Clarey of Detroit Lakes, MN, Christopher (Thea) Clarey of Covington, GA, Robert (Mary) Clarey of Shady Dale, GA, Marliese (Don) Severson of Owatonna, MN, and Patrick (Christie) Clarey of Moorhead, MN; and her daughter, Beverly Johnson of Wheaton, MN and grandchildren: Dawn Johnson of Wheaton, MN, Robert Hess of Wheaton, MN, Terri Hess of Albony, OR, and Camille (Doug) Norris of Alexandria, MN; her son, Warren (Sandy) Griggs of Moorhead, MN and grandchildren: Shannon Griggs of Moorhead, MN, Ryan (Divyata) Griggs of San Jose, CA, Mallory (Brady) Dickelman of Moorhead, MN and the late Megan Griggs; as well as many great grandchildren and great, great grandchildren.
