Free, youngest daughter of Newton J. and Emma Banks Morlan, was born near Confidence, Iowa on Jan. 4, 1879 and departed this life in Osceola, Iowa on Nov. 15, 1978 at the age of 99 years, 10 months and 11 days. She united with the New Providence Baptist Church at Confidence in March, 1896, later transferring her membership to the First Baptist Church in Cambria. From 1898 to 1900, she was a rural school teacher in Appanoose county. On Nov. 13, 1900, she was united in marriage to John I. Free and they established a home on a farm in Appanoose county. Here two daughters were born, Celeste and Marie. Prior to their move to Russell in 1941, they resided on farms in Wayne and Lucas counties. She was preceded in death by her husband on January 29, 1967. After his passing she made her home with her daughter, Marie, first in Russell and more recently in Osceola. Her survivors include two daughters, Celeste Marmon of Big Rapids, Mich. and Marie Woodman of Osceola; four grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren and four great-great-grandchildren. On the occasion of her 97th birthday she was interviewed by the local paper and indicated her active interest in crocheting and game of word challenge. She will be lovingly remembered for her patience, sense of humor and keen mind. Funeral services were held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, Nov. 18, at the Woodman Funeral Home in Russell, with the Rev.
