Myrtle was born on November 10, 1928 to Lloyd and Cora Shipp on the family farm just a mile south of where she lived throughout her married life. She attended country school through the eighth grade and graduated from Waverly High School in 1946. Following graduation, Myrtle worked as a telephone operator in Plainfield.
