Myrtle Marlene Kurtz was born on Sunday, July 28, 1935 to Darrel and Cora (Jensen) Kurtz on a farm near Putney, South Dakota. She was baptized and confirmed at Trinity Lutheran Church at James, South Dakota. She attended country school near her home and graduated from Groton High School in 1953. Myrtle Marlene Kurtz was born on Sunday, July 28, 1935 to Darrel and Cora (Jensen) Kurtz on a farm near Putney, South Dakota. She was baptized and confirmed at Trinity Lutheran Church at James, South Dakota. She attended country school near her home and graduated from Groton High School in 1953. She attended Northern Normal Teacher's College in Aberdeen and received her teaching certificate. She taught school at Riverside, Ferney and Pierpont. On June 17, 1962 she married John Blocker at West Hanson Lutheran Church near Ferney, South Dakota. After their marriage the couple made their home on a farm in Troy Township, Day County, southwest of Butler and in 1970 they moved to a farm in Highland Township. She continued teaching at Lily, Bradley and Florence. She taught school for over twenty years. She then worked at Dakotah, Inc. and the Lake Area Hospital Cafeteria in Webster. She retired because of her health in 2002. Myrtle passed away on Thursday, June 29, 2006 at Aberdeen, South Dakota at the age of 70 years, 11 months and 1 day. Survivors include her husband, John of Webster, SD; one son, Darrel Blocker of Huron, SD; two grandchildren, Marlene and Jonathan Blocker; her mother, Cora Kurtz of Aberdeen, SD; three brothers, Duane Kurtz of Groton, SD, Darwin (Joyce) Kurtz of Whitewood, SD and Dennis (Sue) Kurtz of Claremore, OK; four sisters, Shirley Simon of Kaycee, WY, Lois (Victor) Schwan of Big Bear Lake, CA, Karon Kurtz of Groton, SD and Connie Olson of Rapid City, SD; and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her father. Burial will be in the Webster Cemetery. Arrangements by Fiksdal Funeral Service.
