Description	:	Nancy Caroline Phipps Smith, 81, Independence, Va., passed away after a long illness, Friday, May 15, 2009, at Alleghany Memorial Hospital in Sparta, N.C., surrounded by family and friends. She was born April 15, 1928, in Grayson County, Va., daughter of the late Charles M. and Juanita A. Phipps. She graduated from Independence High School in 1945 and then Roanoke College in 1949 with a bachelor's degree in English. After teaching briefly in Bridle Creek, Va. she moved to California and was soon followed by her high school sweetheart, John R. Smith, of Independence, Va. They married there in 1955.... She was born April 15, 1928, in Grayson County, Va., daughter of the late Charles M. and Juanita A. Phipps. She graduated from Independence High School in 1945 and then Roanoke College in 1949 with a bachelor's degree in English. After teaching briefly in Bridle Creek, Va. she moved to California and was soon followed by her high school sweetheart, John R. Smith, of Independence, Va. They married there in 1955. Nancy and John lived briefly in California and then moved back to Virginia, living in Roanoke, Blacksburg and Rural Retreat, Va., before returning to Grayson County to raise their family. She had a career as an elementary school classroom and Title 1 teacher and as a full time wife and mother of four daughters. Nancy was a lifelong advocate for the environment, civil rights and social justice. She was passionate about helping those less fortunate than herself. She is survived by four daughters, Marianne Smith, of Worcester, Mass., Melinda Isner, of Sparta, N.C., Martha Cox and son-in-law, Doug Cox, of Maryville, Tenn., and Marcia Hart and son-in-law, Lance Hart, of Independence, Va.; she was preceded in death by by her brother, John A. Phipps. She has seven grandchildren, Perry and Evan Isner, Luke and James Cox and Smith, Emily and Isaiah Hart and several nieces and nephews. She is also survived by a sister-in-law, Anna Price, of Sparta, N.C. and brother-in-law and beloved friend, James Smith, of Independence, Va. Funeral service will be held Thursday, May 21, 2009, at 3 p.m. at the Bridle Creek United Methodist Church, Independence, Va., with the Rev. Kathy Haga and the Rev. Bob Miller officiating. The family will receive friends prior to the service at the church. A private interment will follow on May 22, 2009, at the Bridle Creek Cemetery, Independence, Va. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to the Independence Rescue Squad, P.O. Box 607, Independence, Va. 24348 or Allegheny Rescue Squad, P.O.
