She was born Feb. 24, 1942, in Milwaukee, Wis., to Willard and Helen (Chapman) Scharpen. She lived in Longview off and on from 1949 to 1981. She was a 1960 graduate of R.A. She was born Feb. 24, 1942, in Milwaukee, Wis., to Willard and Helen (Chapman) Scharpen. She lived in Longview off and on from 1949 to 1981. She was a 1960 graduate of R.A. Long High School and married LaVern A. Combs on Jan. 8, 1963. Mrs. Combs was a homemaker. She was a member of the Presbyterian church, former member of the Longview Eagles and past president of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Auxiliary in Polson, Mont. She enjoyed crossword puzzles, crocheting and travel and loved time with her grandchildren. She was the recipient of a kidney transplant in July 2001, but retained her memorable laugh and positive attitude towards life. She was preceded in death by her husband in 1995; a half-brother, Roger W. Martin, in 1991; her father; and stepfather, Frank T. Martin, in 1974. Survivors include her mother in Longview; two sons, Harold L. Combs of Kelso and Alan F. Combs of Kalispell; two daughters, Laurie A. Combs of Polson and Susan M. Combs of Kalispell; a half-brother, Jon F. Martin of Seattle; a sister, Mary E. Martin of Longview; seven grandchildren; and many aunts, uncles and cousins. A service was held in Polson. Inurnment has taken place next to her husband at Flathead Cemetery in Polson.
