Lucas, whose death occurred Saturday, came here in 1851. Mrs. C.L. Lucas, one of the oldest of the pioneer women of Boone County, and probably the oldest resident in point of age also, died at her home in this city, Saturday afternoon, March 30th, at the age of 96 years and 13 days. She sustained a stroke of paralysis a week preceding her death and lingered in a state of coma. Mrs. Lucas came to what is now Douglas township and Boone County from Indiana in 1851, at the age of 12. The means of transportation was the then familiar covered wagon. The country was then entirely in its native condition. Goods were transported overland from Keokuk. Boone county was organized that same year and the state was in its infancy. Indians were frequent visitors to the few homes of the settlers, and wild game could be shot from the door step. Mrs. Lucas was born in Clay County, Indiana, March 17, 1839, a daughter of Mr. and Mrs. John Sturdivant, North Carolina people who had emigrated to Indiana but had become dissatisfied with the conditions in that state. They were farm people and they immediately engaged in that occupation on their arrival in this new country. Under the pioneering conditions which prevailed, Mrs. Lucas grew to womanhood and advantaged herself by the crude educational opportunities the sparsely settled community afforded. On February 9, 1862, she was united in marriage to C.L. Lucas, a member of another pioneer family which came to Boone County in 1853, and had settled southeast of Boone. Mr and Mrs. Lucas established their home on a farm about six miles northwest of Madrid. To Mr. and Mrs. Lucas were born four children. Pandora, a daughter, died when about six years of age. J.W., the oldest son, died in Arkansas twenty years ago. The two surviving sons are H.D. and J.G. Lucas, both of Madrid. The husband and father died in June of l933. Mrs. Lucas was the youngest of a family of eight children. The others preceded her in death by many years. In addition to the two sons mentioned, there are a number of grandchildren and great grandchildren. Observed 71st Anniversary Both Mr. and Mrs. Lucas lived to ripe ages. Mr. Lucas died when he was past 94. They celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary in 1912 and just a short time before Mr. Lucas' death occurred the 71st anniversary of their marriage. Mrs. Lucas was a charter member of the Meadow Grove Church of Christ, and on the removal of the family here she and her husband both became members of the Christian church, uniting during the period of the reorganization and rejuvenation of the church during the pastorate of Rev. W.B. Golden. They continued worshiping in this congregation until advanced age and infirmities made their presence impossible. Funeral services were held Monday afternoon at 2 o'clock from the Christian church, with short exercises at the late home, preceding Rev. Bartter, the pastor, preached the funeral discourse. The singers were Mr. and Mrs. Eldon Rosene, Mrs. Otto Scott and Dr. M.M. Shaw, with Mrs. Harold Morning playing the accompaniments. The pall bearers were the two sons and four grandsons, H.D., J.G., Guy C., Max L., Robert, and Vaughn Lucas. Those in charge of the flowers were Mrs. G.E. Hutton and Mrs. Edward Birdsall, the latter a grand-niece of the deceased. A large number of the old friends and neighbors were present. Interment was made in the Fairview Cemetery.
