Brush of Liscomb, one of the real pioneers of the county, who was born April 17th, 1853 in a little log cabin on what is now the Clarence Weatherly farm, a mile west of Liscomb, and who had lived all her life in this community. Mrs. Brush would have been 78 years old if she had lived until April 17th. Mrs. Brush was stricken with intestinal flu 10 days ago and her condition had been serious from the beginning. Pneumonia developed, which was complicated with heart trouble and her death had been expected for some days. Mrs. Brush's parents were Leonard and Eliza (Goodman) Dinnell, who lived in White County, IL. Leonard Dinnell was one of the sturdy pioneers who crossed the planes in the Gold Rush to California in 1849, after he returned to Illinois he decided to try his luck looking for the gold to be found in the fertile Iowa prairies, and with his wife and two little children, John and Sue, came to Iowa in a covered wagon, taking up 300 acres west of Liscomb from the government at $1.25 per acre, his holdings extending to the Iowa river and including timberland and the virgin prairie that was ready for the plow. Nancy was the first child to be born in the little log cabin which stood back in the field and the other children born in Iowa were: Will, George, Carrie, Nathan and Mary. Carrie was only three days old when the cyclone that destroyed New Providence, June 2nd, 1860, swept across the prairie and Leonard Dinnell stood braced against the cabin door to keep it from being blown in. Nancy was married October 14, 1874 to William R. Brush also a pioneer of the county who came to Timber Creek in 1860 with his father Miles Brush. William Brush had been working for farmers in Liscomb and after their marriage Mr. and Mrs. Brush continued to live on farms near Liscomb or in the town during all of their married life. They celebrated their golden wedding anniversary, October 14th, 1924 and Mr. Brush died February 9th, 1925. Mr. and Mrs. Brush were the parents of three children: Mrs. George Van Slyke who lives near Liscomb, Orley of near Conrad and Lemert Brush of Marshalltown and there are seven grandchildren. Mrs. Brush is also survived by a brother George Dinnell of Ainsworth, NE and two sisters, Mrs. Sue Keister and Mrs. Carrie Titus of Santa Ana, California. Mrs. Brush was a lifelong member of the Liscomb Christian church and the funeral will be held from the church Wednesday afternoon at 2 o'clock, in charge of Reverend George W. Biersborn and Reverend Charles Macy with burial in the family lot in the Liscomb cemetery. - Times Republican, March 2nd 1931.
