Redfearn Below is from contributor 48567459 =============== Obituary from the North Carolina Argus (Wadesboro, NC), 9 June 1859 Transcribed by Anson Chesterfield =============== DIED, Of measles, at White’s Store, Anson county, N.C., on the 21st day of May, at half past two p.m., Mrs. NANCY JANE REDFEARN, wife of David Redfearn, and daughter of D. A. and S. A. Covington, aged 17 years, 11 months and 20 days. Death is an unwelcome messenger, and the emotions produced on hearing of the demise of friends, under any circumstances, are melancholy and painful; but doubly so when his cold touch rests upon the brow of one so young, so good, and so gifted as the subject of this notice. Seldom has it been the mournful task of the writer to record the death of one more truly loved and deeply lamented. Sister Redfearn was no ordinary woman. To speak of all the amiable qualities of her life, would be quite tedious. It is not too much to say she had no superiors in the sphere in which she moved. She sustained a high and exemplary character in all the relations of life. All the finer feelings of our nature were prominently developed in her character. Having been carefully trained to nurture and admonition of the Lord, she grew up with great respect and reverence for the religion of the gospel. She did not, however, indulge a hope, or make a profession of religion until during a revival meeting held in connection with the Mount Olive Baptist church in August 1856. At the close of said meeting, she was baptized by the writer. From that time up to the day of her death, her life was a beautiful exemplification of the religion she professed. She would often speak of death as calmly as though she was anxiously awaiting the change. In a letter addressed to her father sometime ago, she said “I love to think of Heaven, and think of meeting my dear little brothers and all my dear relations in that bright and happy world. I get so happy sometimes thinking about it, I almost shout.” During her late illness, her father approached her, and enquired if she loved Jesus? She replied “yes, to be sure I do, and everybody.” A few hours before her final dissolution, she called her husband to her side, and said, as she pressed his hand in her own clay-cold hands, “My dear husband I am dying, do not be alarmed, for I am not – my time has come.” She died as she lived, calmly, peacefully, without a struggle and without a groan; a serene and heavenly smile rested upon her face, as if to soothe the sorrows of the bereaved ones who wept around her bed. Her remains were conveyed to Monroe, where a discourse was delivered by the writer to a large congregation, whose flowing tears and saddened countenances told with moving eloquence how well they loved her, and how deeply they felt the loss they have sustained in her death. Kind friends and mourning relations cease your mourning, dry up those bitter tears – she meets you upon the threshold of Heaven. A. L. S.
