A family, community say goodbye to McCann by Joanie Newman - Coal Valley News - Dec. 2009 Friends and family came to Handley Funeral Home on Monday to say goodbye to 108-year-old Nancy McCann, also known as a Distinguished West Virginian. Far more important than her span of years, was the way McCann lived out her life at the Meadow Brook Assistance with Living Facility in Julian. McCann died Thursday of natural causes. "She was so dear to me; I loved her very much and will miss her dearly," said daughter-in-law Quinnie Richmond, blinking back tears. Right to the day she died, McCann gloried in God's blessings, everyone said. To her family, McCann was love, inspiration and everything in between. According to family, McCann grew up on farmland above Twilight and had been working in a garden up until she was 104 years old "I remember her telling us stories about how she went to the outhouse and was chased around by a black bear," staff member Debbie Huffman recalled earlier this year during McCann's 108th birthday party. It was during McCann's 108th birthday celebration, when Governor Joe Manchin bestowed on her a Distinguished West Virginian award. "A lot of people help to care for her, but the bottom line is that God is the giver and taker of life and for that we give Him thanks," said Eddie Belcher, who had been visiting McCann on her birthday since she turned 100 years old. McCann shared with staff and visitors of Meadow Brook Assisted Living stories of her youth growing up in the southern West Virginian town of Chap, now commonly referred to as Lindytown. McCann was brought into the world surrounded by family and community in a two-story wood house located on the top of a mountain named after her father, Lewis Jarrell Mountain, (now known as Montcoal Mountain) above Twilight. McCann was born July 25, 1901 to parents Lewis and Mary Miller Jarrell. The old homestead had a large wooded table with a long bench and chairs, where many people that worked on the farm from the surrounding small community would congregate to partake of a family meal. Former neighbors recalled the sound of the bell that Nancy's mother, Mary Jarrell, would ring to call the workers to the dinner table, or help to the home during times of illness. Nancy was the youngest of the six siblings and she was the only one born on the Lewis Jarrell Mountain in the two-story house. The rest of her siblings were born at Jarrell's Branch, she recalls. Nancy had four sisters and one brother: Snoma Ferrell, Florence Williams, Nora Jarrell, Holly Henderson, and Sullivan Jarrell. Today, her son Lawrence Richmond, and his family, are the only remaining residents in the small town of Lindytown. Nancy had lived an extraordinarily long life of 108 years, having stood witness to vast changes in West Virginia and the United States. "I remember the first car coming up the hollow that was driven by Alan Workman," Nancy McCann had told a reporter earlier this year. "I remember the old water mill, owned by a man name Bill Mills. He built a dam and we would skate on the ice when the weather was cold." "She loved to be outside. It was taught to her by her father, Lewis Jarrell., who owned 50 acres of farmland," son Lawrence Richmond had shared earlier this year during McCann's birthday celebration. McCann's father, Lewis Jarrell, was a minister at the Church of Christ at Matt's Creek, which is now the Twilight Church of Christ. He eventually donated the property to the church. A traditional farm girl, taught to work hard and raised on the bounty of her labors, McCann enjoyed canning the vegetables she raised in her gardens – everything from tomatoes to squash, if it could be raised in West Virginia soil, McCann will be remembered for her commitment to family and a strong Christian faith. All anyone had to do if they were curious about any secret McCann had for longevity, was ask and she would tell you that she contributed her long life to a good Christian life. Earlier this year, McCann was said to have still attended the Church of Christ at Matt's Creek. In February of 2006, Nancy McCann became unable to care for herself anymore, and the following month she went to Meadow Brook to live with assistance from a caring staff. McCann married twice – first to the late Harvey Richmond, from Twilight, who passed away in 1960. Then, she married the late Nelson McCann. Both men, Nancy's family members explain, were men of faith. Richmond was a preacher and McCann a Bible teacher. McCann had three children by Harvey Richmond, Mabel Meadows, who resides in Michigan, Carson Richmond, who was killed in World War II when he was 21 years old, and Lawrence Richmond, 84, who resides at Twilight. "She has two granddaughters who live in Michigan and they have families and then I have two sons, Roger and Larry, and they have families," Lawrence said. McCann had four grandchildren, six great-grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews. "We will miss her," son Lawrence Richmond said, further adding, "But we all have to face this [death] eventually, when it is our time."
