The Lord called her home on November 25, 2016 at Guthrie County Hospital after spending the evening with family. Ivers Simmons was born November 30, 1938 in Guthrie Center, Iowa. The Lord called her home on November 25, 2016 at Guthrie County Hospital after spending the evening with family. Nancy grew up in rural Guthrie County with her brother, Wayne and sister, Judy, where she attended Baker No. 2 Country School. She also attended Guthrie Center High School and enjoyed playing the french horn in the band and singing in the choir. She graduated high school in 1957. On June 15, 1957, Nancy and Charles LeRoy Wetzel were united in marriage at the First United Methodist Church in Guthrie Center. Nancy and Charlie built their life together through farming, auto repair, and Nancy's nursing career. Nancy worked as a certified nursing assistant at the New Homestead for more than ten years. She graduated from Southwest Community College with an associate nursing degree in 1990. Upon retirement from Mercy Hospital in Des Moines she worked as a traveling nurse in Arizona. Nancy was a devoted and caring mother, grandmother and spouse. Throughout the years she volunteered and supported many organizations. Many of her contributions included being a girl scout leader, President of the high school Band Parents' Association, and Patient Advocate for Alzheimers. She was a life-long and active member of the First United Methodist Church, where she volunteered for many different groups in the church such as Children's Choir, teaching Sunday School, UMW, Pace-setters and various other organizations. Nancy enjoyed traveling with Charlie and camping with their camping club. In her spare time she was an avid reader and enjoyed singing with the church choir. Nothing gave her more joy than caring for others – cooking, baking and hosting family gatherings. Preceding her in death were her parents, Oliver and Helen Simmons and brother, Wayne Simmons. Left behind to celebrate her life are her husband – Charlie; sister - Judy Flanery; daughter – Lorraine Wetzel; sons - Charles Dean (Penny) Wetzel, Jeffery (Nelda) Wetzel; eight grandchildren; eleven great-grand children and two great-great grandchildren; as well as numerous nieces and nephews. Family and friends will remember Nancy for her unconditional love, generosity, kindness, compassion and caregiving.
