Nancy Mae White was born on October 6, 1886, at Calcutta, in Columbiana County, Ohio. She was the youngest daughter of Daniel G. and Martha Maria (Henderson) White. Daniel G. White (1850-1894), and Martha Maria Henderson (1851-1943), were married on February 14, 1880, in Columbiana County. Nancy Mae's grandparents were John W. White (b.1813), and Annie Grenemyer (1815-1910) and Peter Henderson (b. 1824), and Elizabeth Morrow (b.1831). Soon after the death of Daniel G. White, Martha Maria remarried. Her second husband was Joseph Crawford, a native of Ireland, who was born in 1838. He was a widower. He was a veteran of Company M, 6th Regiment, of the O.V.I., who served from December 14, 1862, through June 27, 1865. His Company was in service at Appomattox Court House in Virginia, on April 7, 1865, when Confederate General Robert E .Lee surrendered to General Grant, ending the Civil War. William Crubaugh and Nancy Mae White were married on September 15, 1914, at New Cumberland, in Hancock County, West Virginia. The ceremony was performed by J.C. Lechney. Will and Nancy Mae became parents of two sons. William Leon (born in 1915) and James Harold (born in 1921) There was a general consensus among all who knew Nancy Mae and her mother, that Nancy Mae was a carbon copy of her mother, in virtually all ways and manners. Well-intentioned, but strong willed, and some said, "bull-headed". There was no question in her mind about whether or not she knew exactly what was best for those in her charge, or, for that matter, anyone who might be associated with her, in any manner what so ever. When she perceived one to be in accord with her vision, there was little she would not do for them. The opposite was true to the same degree. The one thing that she was most certain of was, "There were no girls or women alive, who were good enough for her sons." That was an obsession she persisted in enforcing during her entire lifetime. The control she maintained over her sons, particularly her first son, existed in a significantly detrimental manner, until her death occurred. Nancy Mae "Nannie" Crubaugh died at the age of 87 years, 11 months, and 8 days, on September 14, 1974, at her home at 110 Alice Street, in East Palestine, Ohio. She was buried next to her mother in the East Fairfield Township Cemetery. Nannie's parents, Daniel G. White, and Martha Maria White Crawford, and her grandmother, Annie White, and her step-father, Joseph Crawford, are buried close by.
