She had five siblings; Neal, Clyde, Ruth, Gladys and Edith. She was educated in her hometown, graduating from College High School in 1951 and then from Valley City State Teachers College. Read More	Obituary from Flintoft's website: Nancy Marlen Emery was born on September 21, 1934 in Valley City, North Dakota to Amos and Emma Emery. She had five siblings; Neal, Clyde, Ruth, Gladys and Edith. She was educated in her hometown, graduating from College High School in 1951 and then from Valley City State Teachers College. She began her teaching career in Herman, Minnesota. It was there that she met her future husband, Boyd Peterson. Boyd and Nancy moved to Clarkfield, Minnesota, where they started their family. They had three sons, Kyle, Michael and Todd. They lived in White Bear Lake and Stillwater, Minnesota, before moving to the Seattle area to be closer to Boyd’s large extended family. After years spent at home with her sons, Nancy continued her teaching career. She taught at Echo Glen Children’s Center, Issaquah Middle School and Issaquah High School. Inspiring her students to express themselves through writing was her professional passion. Her three sons married; Kyle to Shawn, Mike to Lisa, and Todd to Cheryl, and they all stayed in the Seattle area. They gave her six grandchildren; Dylan, Lucas, Nikki, Ryan, Hailey and Jessi. They were the light of her life in her retirement years. Nancy also loved her second home and adopted community in Sequim, Washington. She relished walks along the beach, caring for her geraniums and feeding the seagulls at her Diamond Point cottage above the water. She also operated a business, Second Chance, a clothing consignment shop, in Sequim, for several years. While she ran it, it consumed most of her time, and she loved every minute of it. Her husband Boyd preceded her in death in 2014. Nancy spent her last nearly three years living at University House in Issaquah. She loved to host family and friends for meals in the dining room. She died peacefully in her apartment on September 19, 2018. Nancy was many things to many people: wife and mother, teacher, friend, mentor, advocate, confidante, champion for the arts, and a beacon of love and empathy. With her husband Boyd Peterson, she overcame her hard scrabble upbringing in North Dakota, established her career as an English teacher, and built a good life raising her three sons (all born within a three-year time span!), devoting herself to their upbringing, later continuing to teach and being a working mother. Always “on the go!”, Nancy was a whirlwind of quests and causes. She was always steadfast in her support of her husband and children, always encouraging accomplishing a goal or a task. She inspired many moves through the years, believing change was a good thing to embrace. Nancy befriended all sorts of people through the years, and served as a counselor and a sounding board, never judging, always encouraging. If she felt someone needed help, without hesitation she would offer it. She volunteered for numerous causes, offering her time and financial support. Nancy was an early environmentalist, recycling way before it was fashionable, figuring out ways to recycle just about anything! She loathed getting rid of anything if it could be re-purposed. Nancy was always inspired by the written word, particularly poetry. She tried to foster this appreciation in her students, family and friends. Nancy was an accomplished writer herself, prolific with letter writing and journals. There is a large archive of her writings. Nancy supported the arts her whole life, and cherished attending plays and musical performances. Nancy Emery Peterson will be remembered mostly for her genuine love for her family, friends and acquaintances. She would always “interview “people to get to know as much as she could about them, deflecting attention from herself. She was a wonderful mother, a steadfast and supportive partner to Boyd, a great friend, and a beacon of light for the world
