Mrs. John Trickle, a pioneer resident of Humbug Creek and Yreka, some 25 years ago; who was highly esteemed by all as a good woman, committed suicide at Centerville, Modoc county, on Sept. 29th. The following is an account of the affair as given by the Alturas Independent, of the 6th: From what we can learn, it seems that on the morning of the sad occurrence there was an unusually stormy scene between Mrs. Trickle and her husband: that Mr. T. went to the barn to do his chores, and Mrs. T. called her little grand-son, Clayton Rees, and told him to go get some wood and she would get breakfast. The boy did as ordered, and while engaged in chopping wood he heard a shot, and running into the house he heard groans, and looking into a room upstairs, discovered his grandmother lying on the floor with her breast bared, and a smoking pistol in her hand. The little fellow did not even go to the barn to tell his grandfather, but started at once for Salisbury's mill, where his mother, Mrs. S.G. Rees, was at work, and told her that "grandma" had killed herself. Mrs. Rees, in company with others from the mill, hastened to the place, and found Mr. Trickle quietly eating his breakfast, and upon asking him if the boy's story was true, he appeared greatly surprised, but an examination showed that it was only too true, and that the old lady had made ample preparations for the awful deed, by spreading quilts on the floor to lie upon, and stripping herself to the waist, so that nothing would impede the progress of the bullet. Coroner Gibson informs us that all of the evidence at the inquest went to show that it was a clear case of suicide, and such was the verdict. Mr. Trickle's innocence of the occurrence is accounted for in this wise: On former occasions when they would quarrel Mrs. Trickle would leave the place and go to the house of some neighbor or relative for several days at a time, and after the quarrel Wednesday morning, he came in from the barn, and not seeing her, supposed she had followed the usual course, and did not give himself any uneasiness, but went to work, cooked his breakfast, and was engaged in eating it, when his daughter and others arrived. Thus ends the sad career of a lady who had nearly reached the allotted "three score and ten years" of this life, and a woman who was universally beloved. The neighbors say while the old lady may have had her faults, she was by far the better of the two; that she had worked like a slave all her life to keep herself and children above want, and that on many occasions she had seen her hard-earned money squandered by her husband at the gambling table and at the bar, and that in other ways he manifested a most tyrannical and brutal disposition toward her. John Trickle may not have been the direct cause of his wife's death, but from what we can learn he is in a great measure responsible, and though the laws of man cannot reach him, and he may escape punishment in this world, there will be a day of reckoning for his kind, and a Court more powerful than any on this earth, will give him his deserts.
