Aid and sympathy for the dying woman and the mourning children are being extended by neighbors. ******** From the Scranton Journal of Thursday, 1 April 1897 - three separate articles on the same page: Nancy Permelia McCurdy was born August 17, 1848. Died March 28th, 1897. Aged 48 years, 8 months and 11 days. She was married to Elias S. Clark, Sept. 35th, 1872, to them were born six children, four sons and two daughters, three of whom survive, Charles L., James W., and Bessie live to mourn the loss of a kind loving mother. On August 2nd, 1890, Elias S. Clark was suddenly taken away from his wife and the little ones by drowning, at the same time May was taken away. This double bereavement fell with crushing effect upon Mrs. Clark. She never seemed to fully recover from the shock. Since that time she has remained a widow, devoting her time and strength to the care of her children. She was converted when quite young and united with the Wesleyan Methodist church. After moving to Kansas, she joined the United Bretheren church and has remained a faithful member until her decease. She was ready for the call of the Master. She selected her funeral text, also the hymns she desired to have sung. She loved the gospel of salvation and was enraptured by the sound of blessed gospel song. She is with the angels, singing where the wicked cease from troubling and the weary be at rest. The funeral services were held at the U. B. church at 11 o'clock on Tuesday, conducted by the writer [G. O. Porter], assisted by Rev. Lott, pastor of the M. E. church. Master Everett Olive played the organ and the friends of the Christian church led the singing. The remains were laid by the side of her husband in the Scranton cemetery to rest til the Lord shall come. The bereaved children have the sympathy of all who know them. **** John McCurdy, of Williamsburg, Kansas, brother of Mrs. E. S. Clark, arrived on the 4 o'clock passenger Tuesday, a few hours too late to attend the funeral of his sister. He will be a guest of Mr. A. O. Clark and other relatives until Monday. ****** One of the things most talked of since the death of Mrs. E. S. Clark was the splendid care she received at the hands of Mrs. A. O. Clark. This good lady is entitled to more than a passing notice for the tender, faithful sympathy which prompted her to exert all the force at her command for many weeks in administering to the needs of the suffering woman. Heaven has many blessings of the rarest kind to reward those who bring cheer and as much of comfort as is possible to those who are near the eternal vale and shadow. [A. O. Clark was the half-brother of Elias Clark, so these women were sister-in-laws.]
