Her girlhood days spent with her parents were happy days. She was marked by a sunny disposition which not only made the home cheerful and happy but also made her a favorite among her schoolmates. As her life blossomed into womanhood, so her friendship increased. On Jan. 1, 1896, she was married to the man she loved, S. L. Smith. That, "God had joined together," was seen in the devotion of this united pair. Eight children have blessed this union, four of which have preceded the mother in death, and four with the husband are left to mourn her departure. Her married life was spent in Iowa with the exception of two and one half years in Colorado and Oregon. Mrs. Smith will be long remembered in this community because of her kind and sympathetic nature. Her utter lack of selfishness made her the best of neighbor and friend. She was always ready and willing to help others to her best ability. As a wife she was a loving helpmate and companion and her self was entirely lost in the interest of home and family. As a mother she kept high ideals of right living with her children and friends will never forget. This true friend, loving sister, devoted wife and affectionate mother passed away at the farm-home southwest of Victor, Wednesday night, January 21, 1917. Age forty years, seven months and twenty-seven days. Those left to miss her, of the immediate family are - her husband, S. L. Smith, the four children, Herbert, Ruby, Marjorie and an infant son, two sisters, Mrs. S. M. Hatzell, of Victor, and Mrs. George Bushnell of near Victor and her mother, Mrs. George Atkinson of Cottage Grove, Oregon. Besides those she leaves a number of other relatives and a host of friends. The funeral took place at the Methodist church on Friday afternoon at 2:00 o'clock. It was one of the largest ever held in Victor, over five hundred people packed the church to its utmost capacity. The choir sang the following songs - "Lead Kindly Light," "Nearer My God To Thee," and "Going Down the Valley." The pastor preached from Romans 8:28, "For we know that all things work together for good to them that love God." Interment was made in the I.O.O.F. cemetery.
