Born May 17, 1925, she was the daughter of the late Jesse Frank and Eula Mathias O'Sheal of Irmo and sister of the late Dr. Frank E. O'Sheal. The beloved wife of Furman R. Younginer, former Mayor of Irmo, Louise and her husband celebrated their 62nd anniversary on May 2, 2010. In addition to her husband, she is survived by their five children and spouses: Miriam Y. and Donald E. Lovett, Caroline Y. and Frederick E. Sojourner, Ann Y. and Robert Gunning IV, Paul F. and Angela M. Younginer, Lucy Y. and Dr. R. Paul Austin. Her ten grandchildren are Furman D. Lovett, Maria L. Cole (Ryan), Caroline Ingram, Robert Gunning V (Hannah), Laura Gunning, Andrew Gunning, Anna Younginer, Robert Paul Austin III, Lewis Austin, Smith Austin. Her three great-grandchildren are Charles Cole, Lily Cole, Molley Gunning. As a descendent of the early Dutch Fork settlers, Mrs. Younginer was proud of her family and community heritage and was a life-long resident of Irmo. Her childhood home in Irmo, built in the early 1890s and occupied by her maternal grandparents and then her parents, was located on the corner of one of the major crossroads in Irmo at the intersection of Lake Murray Blvd. and St. Andrews Road. This large, two-story, farmhouse-style home was a fixture in Irmo for almost 100 years until it was moved in 1980 to allow commercial development at that intersection. Mrs. Younginer was a 1942 graduate of Irmo High School and graduated magna cum laude in 1945 from the University of South Carolina with a B.S. degree in Business Administration. Her career included working at the SC Highway Department, USC Registrar's Office, and the Columbia office of the U.S. Department of Agriculture. After her marriage, she was a devoted fulltime mother, homemaker, and dedicated worker for the Town of Irmo during the period of major growth and development of Irmo and the surrounding communities. Louise Younginer was Honorary Town Historian of Irmo and enjoyed reading and collecting historical information, particularly items concerning the Irmo/Dutch Fork area. This avid interest culminated in the significant research and writing contributions that she made toward the Irmo history book, Irmo and the Dutch Fork Legacy. Mrs. Younginer and her husband maintained a collection of pictures that were significant in depicting historical elements of the Irmo/Dutch Fork area. To preserve the pictorial history of the community, she donated photographs to the Greater Irmo Chamber of Commerce which are permanently displayed in the Hall of History. Many photos are also displayed at a local restaurant as well as the Dunbar Funeral Home-Dutch Fork Chapel. Mrs. Younginer was a devout Christian and faithful follower of Jesus Christ. Above all else, her daily goal was to live according to the scriptures. Throughout their lives, her children were always comforted with the knowledge that their mother prayed for them daily. She lived a Christ-centered life and established this example for her children to follow. Until her health declined, she was active in many organizations and her church, which she attended regularly. She was a member of the original Board of Directors of Sharing God's Love, a local cooperative Christian ministry in Irmo for those in need of food and other services. She was a member of Irmo Pentecostal Holiness Church (Family Worship Center), Joy Circle of Salem United Methodist Church, American Legion Auxiliary Unit 7, Daughters of the American Revolution (Granby Chapter), Friends of the Lexington County Museum, Greater Irmo Chamber of Commerce, and Executive Club of the Midlands. The family appreciates the expressions of kindness from her many friends and loved ones throughout her life. Special thanks to the staff of Ascension Hospice and her caregivers during her illness: Sylvia Phelps, Joan Rogers, Melissa Keefe, Mildred McLauren. Visitation will be from 6 until 7:30 P.M., Wednesday, August 18, 2010, at Dunbar Funeral Home, Dutch Fork Chapel, Irmo. The funeral will be at 4:00 P.M. Thursday, August 19, 2010, at Salem United Methodist Church (1321 Salem Church Road, Irmo, SC) with burial immediately following in the Irmo Pentecostal Holiness Church (Family Worship Center) cemetery at 10501 Broad River Road, Irmo, SC 29063.
