He is survived by his loving family, wife Ileen of 59 years; two sons and two daughters, David (Gerrie) of Neerlandia, Betty (Walter) Vanderzyl of Neerlandia, Lawrence (Lucille) of Neerlandia, Rosanne (Larry) Olson of Fort Assiniboine; 11 grandchildren, Sharalee (George), Laura (Darcy), Allan (Carolyn), Jodi (Robert), Derek, Doreen (Charles), Kevin (Christina), Terrence, Jamie, Amanda and Debbie; 22 great-grandchildren; one sister-in-law, Annie Terpsma as well as nieces, nephews and many dear friends. Norman was predeceased by his infant daughter Florence Irene in 1961, parents, David and Betty, brothers, John and Harda, Art and Rose, George, sisters, Florence and Dick, Ada and Ernie, Tina and Pete. Visitation will be held Tuesday, May 6th at 7:00 P.M. at Rose Garden Chapel. Funeral Service will be held on Wednesday, May 7th at 1:00 P.M. from the Canadian Reformed Church in Neerlandia with Reverend W.B. Slomp and Reverend Bert Tiggelaar officiating. Interment to follow in the Neerlandia Cemetery. Donations gratefully accepted to the Barrhead Healthcare Palliative Care Unit. Rose Garden Chapel in care of arrangements. 674-4644 * Norman was born Nanning Terpsma, and was the son of Douwe Jan Terpsma and Bregtje Dijkstra. He and his family emigrated on April 22, 1911, from Franeker, Netherlands to Paterson, New Jersey, U.S.A. (Paterson, New Jersey is located west of New York, and a lot of Dutchmen worked there in the silk industry). Norman, was just two at the time of this epic journey, and one of the seven Terpsma children, out of a handful of families who came from Holland. One can only speculate about the feelings of Douwe and his family as they boarded the boat for Canada: excitement probably, hope, and trepidation. In Holland, Douwe had worked mainly on dairy farms. In Canada, there was the prospect of being given a quarter of land by the government and starting a new life. Norman's father Douwe Terpsma and Norman's Uncle John Terpsma were 2 of the 16 founders of Neerlandia. _________________________________________________________
