Description	:	The moderate circumstances of the father opened no opportunities beyond the ordinary range of Rhode Island boys, and daily toil among the rocks and in the sterile soil of his native State was the commencement of his youthful life. Read More	The moderate circumstances of the father opened no opportunities beyond the ordinary range of Rhode Island boys, and daily toil among the rocks and in the sterile soil of his native State was the commencement of his youthful life. The schools of Rhode Island, in those days were few and far between, but neither distance, nor wind, nor snow, kept him from all the schools within his reach; and, with a strong grasp of the sciences taught in those days, the boy Nathan ripened into the man of more than ordinary scientific acquirements. He taught several schools in his own neighborhood, with good success and entered upon manhood's life in advance of all the boys who started with him, on the same line. His aptness for and love of music made him chorister in his father's church, many years ; and the same native trait is seen developed in his family. He married Cilda Matteson, daughter of Job Matteson, Esq., of Coventry, by whom he had ten children. Of this large family, not one, either by misfortune or misconduct, has brought disgrace or grief to a parent's heart. In 1839, the worthy wife, the excellent mother, with whom he had lived thirty years, died, and subsequently he married Rhoda Cooke, with whom his family had been acquainted for many years--a lady every way worthy and well qualified to smooth the down hill of life. They are both living; the one very infirm, the other nearly blind, though cheerful and happy, awaiting the call of the Master they have long loved and served. The ability and moral worth of Nathan K. Stone has been acknowledged by his town and State. For many years, he was Justice of the Peace and several times representative in the General Assembly of the State; and many, in various portions of New England, cherish, with interest, their acquaintance with this worthy man.
