Description	:	Nathaniel Fanning Stevens, Essex's oldest resident, died yesterday morning at the cottage of his daughter, Mrs. George Seeley, at Westbrook, after a few day's illness caused by heat prostration and heart trouble. Read More	Nathaniel Fanning Stevens, Essex's oldest resident, died yesterday morning at the cottage of his daughter, Mrs. George Seeley, at Westbrook, after a few day's illness caused by heat prostration and heart trouble. Mr. Stevens was born in Clinton December 4, 1803, at the old Stevens homestead in the north part of the town. He had seven brothers and one sister, all of whom lived to be over 70 years of age. He was the youngest. He went to Georgia, where he carried on a merchant tailoring business for several years when, his health having been regained, he returned north and married Miss Sarah T. Wilcox of Clinton, November 27, 1832. Then he moved to Essex and settled, engaging in the home business, which he carried on the nearly thirty years under the firm name of Stevens & Chapman on Main street. He retired from business about 1860. The building where he was located is now a general merchandise store. Mr. Stevens had always been hale and hearty, seldom knowing a sick day. He went to Westbrook to remain for the summer about six weeks ago and had been in his usual health until a few days before he died. He had always been very temperate in his habits, but enjoyed a good cigar and was exceedingly fond of outdoor sports. He had owned several smart craft in his day. He leaves one daughter and one son, Mrs. George Seeley of New York and George Ives Stevens of Essex, proprietor of the Essex paint works. Mr. Stevens had made his home for many years with his son on West Avenue and also spent part of the time with his daughter, Mrs. Seeley. During the summer, he spent about three months at Westbrook at the Seeley cottage. He was for many years a member of the Essex First Congregational Church. He leaves six grandchildren, William Seeley of Brookline, Mass., Harry Seeley of Flushing, N.Y., George Seeley of Asheville, N.C., Mrs. Ralph Otis of Chicago, Ill., and Miss Mae Stevens and Paul Stevens of Essex. The funeral will take place tomorrow afternoon at 1:30 at his late home, the residence of his son, George Ives Stevens. Rev. W.F. Arms, pastor of the Essex First Congregational Church, will officiate. Interment will be in the Stevens plot in Riverview Cemetery. Hartford Courant, August 2, 1901, page 13
