Nathaniel served in the Revolutionary War with the 4th Regiment, Orange Co., New York, Militia. Compiled Service records, Hasbrouck's Regiment Militia, include “Terwilla, Nathaniel”, card # 37113601 and Pay Roll for service from Oct 3 - 7, 1777. [NARA M881 roll #74] He is listed in the DAR Patriot Index, Vol II, 1979, and Graves of Rev War soldiers. In the Spring of 1795 Nathaniel, his children, and many relatives, including brother-in-law Cornelius Snider, Cronimus, and Jacob Felter, and Jacob Roosa left their homes in Montgomery, New York, and went to the Northwest Territory., followed soon thereafter by the Christian Crist family, also relatives. After a short stay near Ft. Washington, Columbia, they settled the town of Montgomery, Ohio in section 3, and section 4, later named Sycamore Township. Nathaniel purchased 160 acres in section 3, on 1st Aug. 1796 and an adjoining 380 acres 25 May 1801. It was on this land that the village of Montgomery was established, the original plat map of the town filed by Nathaniel 24 March 1802 [Deeds E2:19] Founders of the Montgomery Presbyterian Church included Cornelius and Mary Snyder, Nathaniel and Ann Terwilliger, Jacob and Catharine Roosa, Cronimus and Louisa Felter, and Jacob and Elizabeth Felter. [Montgomery, Ohio Presbyterian Church bulletin, 2 Jul 1995, quoting J.C. Olden,1882]. Nathaniel was married three, or perhaps four times. His first wife, Catrina Snider, probably died in New York shortly after the 1794 birth of their last child. Between 22 Aug 1796 and 27 Jan 1797 Nathaniel married Ann, widow of Harmanus Taulman. [per deed without and with Ann’s signature]. Ann died between 22 Aug 1796 and 27 Jan 1797, when Nathaniel once again signed a deed with no wife. Nathaniel’s last wife is misunderstood because of a newspaper account, "Married on Thursday evening, last by Cornelius Snyder, Esq., Mr. Nathaniel Terwilliger, aged about 60, to Miss Mary Whitesides, an amiable young lady, turned of 20; both of Sycamore township in this county." However, Nathaniel and wife Catherine signed a deed 29 Dec 1808. Catherine was the mother of child James Terwilleger, born abt Sep 1808. If Nathaniel did marry “Mary”, it was no more than a 6 month marriage. If so, then Nathaniel almost immediately thereafter married her probable sister, Catherine Whiteside McGee. Nathaniel died between 29 Dec 1808 and 31 Jan 1809. On Dec 29, Nathaniel and wife Catherine, sold to Harmanus Taulman land north of Montgomery adjoining lot #22, bounded on the east by the road from Columbia to Deerfield, and on the north and west by lands of said Terwilliger, containing one fourth acre. [Deeds H:179] January 31, 1809 Nath'l Terwilliger decd, Catherine Terwilliger “prayed to have herself appointed guardian to James Terwilliger, aged 5 months”. Sec James Whiteside [HCoOh Probate 171]. Some have written that this Catherine was Nathaniel’s daughter, but Nathaniel’s daughter Catherine married Joseph Crist by 1804. In a deed after Catherine Terwilleger’s 1815 death her heirs were named as James Terwilleger and William McGee [38:115]. Probate and deed records indicate that Catherine Whiteside, married first James McGee, had a child William about 1796, and then married Nathaniel Terwilleger after the death of her first husband.
