King, 98, of Sioux Falls, South Dakota and formerly of Shenandoah, Iowa, passed away Friday, June 6, 2003 at the Southridge Health Care Facility in Sioux Falls. King, the daughter of Henry and Anna (Chrestensen) Heaton, was born August 4, 1904, on a farm in Fremont County, Iowa and passed away June 6, 2003, at the Southridge Health Care Facility in Sioux Falls, South Dakota. Attending the Shenandoah, Iowa school system, Anna went through accelerated learning, graduating in 1920, at the age of 15 from Shenandoah High School. She received her elementary teaching certificate from Peru State College, and launched a career teaching kindergarten, first in Farnam, Nebraska, and then from 1928 to 1937 at Central School in Shenandoah. On June 15, 1937, in Nebraska City, Nebraska, Nedra was united in marriage to Errol G. King. Over the next several years, they lived in several locations in California, Arizona, Wichita Falls, Texas, Chamberlain, South Dakota, where their son, Ronald Joe, was born, and Faribault, Minnesota. Eventually they settled back in Shenandoah, and it was here that Nedra began her second career, working in the offices of Mount Arbor Nurseries. She was employed by Mount Arbor for 37 years, until retiring at the age of 74, in October of 1978. Nedra loved to work and play with children, and considered her years of teaching kindergarten among the happiest of her life. She loved traveling, and took some wonderful trips, including one to Spain and Portugal. She enjoyed playing cards with her friends, and doing nice things for senior citizens. She also had fun letting people know that her middle name, Arden, is Nedra spelled backward. Being a long time member of the First Presbyterian Church, Nedra served as a deacon, was a member of W.H.E.O.S. and belonged to Nautilus Club. She enjoyed attending community concerts and plays at the Park Playhouse. For many years she was a frequent blood donor to the American Red Cross. Nedra continued living in her home in Shenandoah until moving to an assisted living center in Sioux Falls early in 2000 to be near her family. Preceding Nedra in death were her parents; husband, Errol in 1953; sister, Hazel; and a brother, Raymond. Survivors include her son Ronn King and wife, Rita, of Sioux Falls; 3 grandsons, Kevin King and wife, Donna of Nashville, Tennessee, Scott King and wife, Dianna of Dallas, Texas and Troy King of Arlington, Texas; and five great grandchildren. She is also survived by 2 nieces, Shirley Lader and Jean Berry of California; several cousins, including Harold Dahlgran of Shenandoah; and a number of good friends. Nedra was proud of her family and always maintained a very positive outlook on life. A celebration of Nedra’s life was held at 10:30 A.M., Tuesday, June 10, 2003, at the First Presbyterian Church in Shenandoah with Reverend Rick Sleyster officiating. At the memory register was Mary McNeilly and Lois Pease. Caring for flowers was Doris Brodersen and Anna Marburger. Pianist was Becky Hoenshel and musical selections sung by Susie Schaaf were “Climb Every Mountain”, “In The Garden” and “You’ll Never Walk Alone.” “How Great Thou Art” was sung by Ronn King and hymns sung by the congregation were “Joyful Joyful We Adore Thee” and “For All The Saints”. Ushers were Quentin Gibson and Don Nelson. Casket bearers were Roger Gardner, Phil Gibson, Jack Jennings, Jeff Jennings, Bob Larson and Bob Longman. Honorary bearers were Lynn Baldwin, Kevin King, Scott King, Troy King, Dr. Eugene Lloyd, Leslie Payton and LeRoy Spargur. Final resting place was in Riverton Cemetery at Riverton, Iowa. Riverton Cem
