Perkins grew up in an environment of Quakerism in which belief that the individual can be embodied with an "Inner Light" - the direct voice of GOD. It is superior to human reason and therefore eliminates the need for priests or other intermediaries. One day Reverend Needham Perkins "was set upon by thieves, who cut his throat, hit his head with the butt of guns, and left him for dead after taking a large sum of money. My grandmother told of the ordeal, the intensity of his wounds, how he feigned death, when the assailants returned to be sure he would not be able to tell who they were, and of his long recovery into a limited life...The meaningful thing to her, however, was that even though he knew who the perpetrators were he would never give out their names. Why? Because he knew they would be caught and hanged and he would not be a cause of the breaking of the commandment, "Thou Shalt not Kill".
