He was born Jan. 18, 1938 in New Washington and had lived all of his life in Willard. He retired as owner of the Steinmetz BP in Willard, where he worked for 27 years. He was a member of the St. Francis Xavier Catholic Church in Willard, where he was a past church council member, eucharistic minister, member of the 55 Plus Club and involved with the RCIA. He graduated from Willard High School in 1957. Surviving are his wife, Shirley (Scott) Steinmetz, whom he married Feb. 1, 1958; two daughters and sons-in-law, Denise and Darwin Funk of Steuben and Kelly and Juan Esparza of Reynoldsburg; four sons and daughters-in-law, Kevin and Dianne Steinmetz and Scott and Betty Steinmetz, both of Willard, Mike and Diana Steinmetz of Port Washington, Wis. and David and Drema Steinmetz of Chatfield; 18 grandchildren and one great-grandchild; brother, Bob Steinmetz; five sisters, Germaine Stevens, Helen Beamer, Irene Hershiser, Mary Gross and Esther Postema. He was preceded in death by his parents, Clem and Eleanor (Schreiner) Steinmetz; infant twin daughters; two brothers, George and Don Steinmetz; two sisters, Joan Steinmetz and Shirley Hay. Visitation was held Sunday from 2 p.m. and 4 p.m. and 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. at the Secor Funeral Home in Willard, where there will be prayer service at 8:45 p.m. The funeral Mass will be held Monday (today) at 10 a.m. at the St. Francis Xavier Catholic Church in Willard with Father Melvin Verhoff officiating. Burial will be at St. Joseph Catholic Cemetery in Willard. Memorial may be made to the St. Francis Church or to the Leukemia Society.
