Description	:	CLINTON, Iowa -- Nelda Schneider passed away with her son by her side, Tuesday, June 30, 2009, at Mercy Living Center South after being a dialysis patient for seven years. Visitation will be 5-8 p.m. today at Lemke Funeral Homes North Chapel, 2304 N. 2nd st. A Celebration of Life service will be held Friday at 10:30 a.m. at the funeral home, with Chaplain Elliott George officiating. Burial will follow the service at Oakland Cemetery. Casket bearers will be her three grandsons, Paul Schneider ii, Casey Deedon and Curt Schneider as well as Dick Peters and Dick Seeser, and Jim Pearson, her longtime friends from school. Nelda was born at the family home in Charlotte, Iowa, on November 22, 1932, the fourth child of Ellsworth Kinkaid and Carrie Alberta Johnson Kinkaid. Nelda met the love of her life and her solemate, William (Bill) Schneider, riding on a motorcycle. On September 9, 1948, they rode to Cedar Rapids in the Schneider Produce truck. They found a taxi drive who took them to his minister to marry them, the taxi driver was their witness! Then on the way home, they rolled the truck, called a wrecker and went backt to their own parents/ house and didn"t tell anyone they got married. Nelda' sister lived in Iowa City and saw the marraige license in the newspaper and called to ask why nobody let her know they got married, the secret was out! Bill and Nelda were married for 48 years. Nelda was a great mom; she had a wonderful smile and a great sense of humor! She lover her three children, Mary, Paul and Sandra(Sandy). She always had time to play ball, ride bikes, play in the snow, make great lunches to eat in the tree house and have lots of slumber parties! Paul played baseball and she was active with the teams he played with. Nelda was a very busy and energetic lady who ran three very successful businesses. First, she had a boarding home for five seniors ladies. Next, was the Tastee Freez on Main Avenue. People still comment on how good the beef burgers were and say how their just aren't any egg or tuna salad sandwiches like that anymore. Then Bill and Nelda decided to retire but life had other plans. Nelda's friend, Joanne Rogis, had her cakery and they decided Nelda would do catering and Joanne would do cakes. Nel continued with the catering and soon branched out to baking cakes, breads and wedding cakes. Nelda always enjoyed her four grandchildren and her two great-grandhildren, although she always wished the great-grandchildren lived closer than Minnesota. Nel's favorit things to do were spend time with her family, reading books, traveling, playing cards, volunteering at the hospital information desk, talking to her friends on the phone and going out to eat. In the last few years she loved watching her son, Paul, with his hot air balloon, and Ballons in June. Nelda was so proud of Paul's accomplishments with becoming a licensed balloon pilot. She waspecially loved all her furry friends through the years, her two dogs, Sadie and Tucker. She was very involved with th PTA at Horace Mann School while her children were students there. She also belonged to the Lyons Club, the Moose, the Antique Truck Club and mercy Auxiliary until her health got worse. Nelda was a fantastic wife and mom, a wonderful and very caring friend. She will be rmembered and missed by many. She is survived by her daughter, Mary (Gene) Deedon, and her son Paul Schneider, grandson, Paul Schneider II, Casey (Amara) Deedon, Curt Schneider(Dawn Naas) and Lisa Deedon (Paul Watson), her two great-grandchildren, Rheya Elizabeth and Gavan William Deedon, son-in-law, Scott (Pat) Burlingame, her brother, Merlin (Mary Jo) Kinkaid, her sister, Lois Luckritz, and of course, Nel's two very spoiled puppies, Tucker and Sadie, and severla nieces, nephews, cousins, a sister-in-law and brother-in-law. She was preceded in death by her husband, William, in 1996, her daughter, Sandra Burlingame, iin 2002, her parents, one sister, Ruth and two brothers, Glenn and Norman. May God bless them all when they get together and Nelda makes them all a great big swiss steak or roast beef reunion dinner. Nelda's family wouyld like to thank the entire dialysis unit, the staff and patients who shared their lives with Mom for the last seven year, 12 hours a week, also, to Dr. Whalen, Dr. Ringold and Dr. Robinson and to the staff on 3rd and 4th floors at Mercy Lving Center. All of you made the last months of Mom's life so much better with your smiles, visit and compassion. Thanks also to Genesis VNA Hospice staff for keeping her comfortable. Memorial contributions would be appreciated for the Clinton Humane Societ or to a fund to be established for Mercy South for blanket warmers for the dialysis unit and 3rd floor at the South Campus.
