Her five year old brother John named her after his friend Nellie Gardner who lived in the next town. Nellie Blanchard and Nellie Gardner Condon remained friends throughout their lives. Nellie was the youngest in a large family of 6 brothers and sisters. She had a wonderful childhood growing up on the farm. She realized at a young age that she did not want to marry a farmer. However, farm life shaped her independence and gave her a strong-willed nature. Nellie came to California for a vacation to visit Nellie Gardner Condon and her husband and never left. One year later, her mother, Kate, came out on the trail with her rolled up feather bed and a bird in a cage. Nellie worked as a waitress at the Oakland Hotel starting in 1931. She did not know the difference between an avocado and an artichoke. However, she learned to be an excellent cook and hostess for her family and social groups. One night one of the waitresses at the Oakland Hotel was having a Halloween party with the staff at her apartment. There was a knock on the door and it was the head waiter, 'Bill' Blanchard. That evening Bill asked Nellie to dance. She always said that she would not marry before she was 25 years old. She married Bill 19 days after her 25th birthday on October 25, 1932. Nellie and Bill danced together for 20 years. On January 13, 1937, a bundle of joy arrived that they named Jeanette after Jeanette McDonald, a movie star from the 1930's. Bill and Nellie opened a restaurant in Oakland in 1939. One day between breakfast and lunch shift, Nellie walked up the street and looked at a house for sale. She wanted some place for Jeanette to play. She decided right then to buy the house. Nellie decided to sell the restaurant in 1941, she got a temporary job for the Railway Express Agency. She was the first woman in the Bay Area to drive a semi-truck. Thirty years later she retired after holding several positions. In 1947, Nellie joined the Fruitvale Chapter #297 of the Eastern Star where she is 50+ year member and past Worthy Matron. She held her first position in 1948 as Esther. Nellie and Bill derived much pleasure from the valued friendships they gained from their involvement in the Masons and Eastern Star. After her husband Bill's passing in 1952, Nellie continued to be involved in work and social endeavors. After she retired, she went to work at the Oakland Women's Athletic Club as a waitress where she worked part time until she was 86. She loved to travel around the country and Europe seeing new places. She was a volunteer for Brown Bag, giving food to the needy once a week. Nellie loved her daughter Jeanette and granddaughters, Michele and Junay and was a very big part of their lives. Nellie was also a very caring and giving person to her friends and neighbors. She sold her home in 1991 and moved to Chico where she lived until 1999. She then moved to Quincy, CA, where she lived with her daughter until 2001. In 2001, she moved to Sacramento, CA where she lived at the Rosemont Senior Care Home. She is now dancing with her husband Bill again. Nellie's chosen resting place will be the Highland Cemetery in Lynch, NE with her family.
