Text: Jesse Lee Trumbo, aged 19, marries Nellie Kenyon, aged 17, both of Chico, on Feb 13, 1913, at Oroville. ~~~ Chico Enterprise, Thursday Evening, February 13, 1913, pg 3 col 5: “Weds Girl To Avoid Being Jailed. The law was circumvented this morning when, in order to avoid a prosecution for seduction under promise of marriage, Jesse Trumbo, who has been known as Jesse Chandler, 19 years of age and son of Mrs. Ernest Olmstead, residing in Nord avenue, agreed to immediately marry pretty 17-year-old Nellie Kenyon, daughter of C.M. Kenyon, residing in Fourth street at South Main, whom it was alleged he wronged, and for which offense he was arrested at midnight last night by Constables Charles McEldowney and Douglas Crum in the home of Charles Beck, six miles below Butte City. “Immediately after the arrest this morning the parents of the two youths held a consultation with Assistant District Attorney George Le Rossignol and Justice J.L. Barnes, before whom the complaint in seduction was signed by the father of the girl, and agreed that in order to spare the young couple, it was agreed to keep the matter out of the criminal courts through the medium of a matrimonial alliance. With Constable Crum the girl and boy and parents left for Oroville on the 10:20 Northern Electric train to consummate the plan to evade a serious prosecution of Chandler. They were married there by Justice of the Peace Parks. “The young people have been in the public eye before because of their youthful companionship. Upon promise of the parents to keep them apart, the matter of prosecution was dropped. The Chico Enterprise-Record, Chico, CA, Monday, Jul 23, 1956, pg 3: "Nellie Bly Boyd --- Funeral services were conducted in the Brusie Funeral Home this afternoon for Mrs. Nellie Bly Boyd, who died Wednesday. "Rev. Earl Barnett, pastor of the First Baptist Church, officiated at the services. Carl Hunter sang 'In the Garden' and 'Beyond the Blue Horizon.' "Interment was in the Chico Cemetery.
