Mrs. Irish was born at Keokuk, Iowa, Dec. 25, 1868, the daughter of John S. and Littie Rudick Moore. She was a member of the First Congregational Church, Ottumwa, and Lynds Chapter No. 27, Order of the Eastern Star, Keosauqua. Surviving are a daughter, Mrs. S.M. Mrs. Irish was born at Keokuk, Iowa, Dec. 25, 1868, the daughter of John S. and Littie Rudick Moore. She was a member of the First Congregational Church, Ottumwa, and Lynds Chapter No. 27, Order of the Eastern Star, Keosauqua. Surviving are a daughter, Mrs. S.M. Workman, Keosauqua; two granddaughters, Mrs. Calvin A. Graham of Ventura, Calif., and Mrs. Ben E. Summerwill of Iowa City, three great grandsons and one great granddaughter. These are the simple facts of Nellie Irish's life as she herself wrote them down before she went away. Just a modest brief outline that failed to tell of her good works, of her many friends and of a personality that could always find something light and happy in the too-serious things of life and pass it on to the other folk. But it did unlock a flood of happy memories in our association with her. Mrs. Irish began her life here, when, as a lonely little orphan girl of five, she and a brother, George, came to live with "Aunt Lide," whom we know as Lida Moore Witaker. "Aunt Lide" was both mother and father to these two children, sharing her home and devotion whole heartedly. George, the brother, died in 1892. On April 30, 1889 Nelle Moore was married to Samuel Edd Irish. They had one daughter, Edna, now Mrs. Stanley Workman of Keosauqua. Mrs. Irish's married life neded(sp) with the death of her husband on July 15, 1922. These two were for years in the Law and Abstract business together and were familiar and welcome figures on "Court House Hill" where they both lived and worked. It was "Ed and Nell" to the town and all their friends, and they played an important part in the progress of a sleepy little town that was just coming awake. With her husband gone, Mrs. Irish, always restless, left Keosauqua to make a new place for herself in Ottumwa. For the last 15 years she shared the home of Mrs. Rilda Disbrow, the wife of a cousin. These two were like sisters, and the years they shared were happy congenial ones. Nelle, always frail, contracted a lingering disease this past year, and the intolerable pain resulting was met with courage and patience. These last two months she and "Rilda" with her and her daughter, Edna, caring for her, and she was happy and content with their nearness 'til she closed her eyes in eternal sleep in the evening of a July day. One happy incident during her sickness occurred on May 23 of this year. A group of members from Lynd Chapter O.E.S. made a special trip to Ottumwa to present Mrs. Irish with a pin and certificate due her as a fifty year member of this chapter. That little group loved the giving and Nelle loved the givers of those emblems. And so we turn the key, as we say goodbye to some one very dear, and we go our way, grateful for the brief interlude that has recaptured some precious memories of yesterday. Source: Van Buren Co.
