She was alone at the home when she committed the terrible act. Upon arriving home from the store at six o'clock Mr. Hunt could not find his wife and instituted a search for her. Going to an outdoor toilet he found the door locked, and upon forcing it open discovered his wife dead. She had placed a gun to her mouth and fired the fatal shot. Mrs. Hunt had not been in good health for a long time and was undoubtedly deranged. During the past summer, however, she appeared to be better and spent most of her time out of doors, driving her automobile. One the afternoon of the fatality she had visited her neighbors and there was nothing in her appearance to indicate she had in mind any motive of self destruction. The entire town mourns the death of this talented woman. As Miss Nellie Merten she was a graduate nurse of Finley hospital, Dubuque, and bore the reputation of being one of the best nurses who ever left the institution. It was while nursing the little motherless daughter of Mr. Hunt through a critical illness that the friendship was formed which terminated in their marriage twenty years ago. Nellie, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. John S. Merten of Colesburg, was born in Delaware county, Jan. 19, 1873. She was united in marriage with William Hunt of Earlville on June 17, 1905. Two sons were born to Mr. and Mrs. Hunt, Merten J., at home, and Earl J., a student at Ames college. Upon her marriage Mrs. Hunt became the stepmother of four young children--Archie Hunt of Waterloo, Raymond of Wichita, Kas., Howard of Manchester, and Lucile, who is a nurse in Lincoln, Neb. These children, together with their father survive her. Besides her immediate family Mrs. Hunt is survived by her aged parents, Mr. and Mrs. J. S. Merten of Colesburg, and the following brothers and sisters: Mrs. J. A. Slick of Earlville, Mrs. Kate Klaus, Mrs. Carl Wellemeyer and Mrs. Fred Keck of Colesburg, Mrs. Fred Haug of Manchester, John Merten of Colesburg, and Harvey Merten of Springfield, N. Y. Funeral services were held at the Congregational church Sunday afternoon, conducted by the pastor, the Rev. Arthur J. Miles. The vast congregation present and the many beautiful floral offerings spoke eloquently of the high regard in which Mrs. Hunt was held by all. Interment was made in Fairview cemetery. Mrs. Hunt's memory will be revered by many friends in Earlville. Her sympathetic nature prompted her to give aid to the afflicted, and many a sick person was soothed by her tender ministrations. She was very industrious, a devoted wife and mother and the home is rendered desolate by her tragic death. She was a member of the Congregational church and was ever ready to lend a helping hand in every good cause. Today, in sad memory of our departed friend, let us be more kind and charitable and bow our heads in obedience to the will of God.
