Lund, at Webster City, December 23, 1920. Although he was well advanced in years and very feeble and infirm, it was not known here that death was so near. He lived in Stratford last summer with his daughter, Miss Minnie Lund. Nels John Lund was born in Kraftnas, Hallngberg, Sweden, April 6, 1834 and on the day of his death had arrived at the ripe old age of 86 years, 8 months and 17 days. He was united in marriage to Miss Carolina Sophia Johnson in Sweden February 27, 1863. To them were born nine children - five sons and four daughters. His wife and five children and a brother, Andrew, have preceded him in death. With his wife and then small family he came to America during the year 1866 and located in what is known as the Swede Bend community on August 8th of the same year. A number of years ago he turned his farms over to his sons and has since lived in Stratford, being absent from this place but very little during the last few years. He was well known all over the county as a hard working man during his younger years and through his efforts had accumulated considerable of this world's goods. His last years were spent in living with his daughter, and sons on whom he had depended to care for him in his feebleness. He was a generous and kindhearted man and was one of those men who had paved the way for better conditions for future generations. He leaves to mourn his death, his three sons: David, Oscar and Frank; one daughter, Miss Minnie Ellen, one brother, Swen Erick Lund, seven grandchildren, besides a host of friends in this section of the county. Funeral services were held from the local Baptist church Sunday afternoon in charge of the pastor, Rev. C.G. Bengtson, and the remains laid beside those of his wife in the South Marion cemetery. WAS 86 YEARS OLD Funeral Sunday Afternoon at Baptist Church in Stratford. Nels J. Lund, who for many years was well known and prominent in the community about Stratford, passed away at 3 o'clock Thursday afternoon at the home of his youngest son, Frank J. Lund, 1301 First street, in this city. Funeral services were held at the Baptist church in Stratford Sunday afternoon at 1 o'clock and interment was made in the South Marion cemetery, southeast of Stratford. Mr. Lund was born in Sweden, April 6, 1834, being 86 years, 8 months and 17 days old at the time of his death. He was married Feb. 27, 1863, to Miss Carolina Sophia Johnson and with her emigrated to America in the summer of 1866, arriving in the Swede Bend community near Stratford on Aug. 8th of the same year. With the exception of a few years' residence in this city he made his home in and near Stratford. He was a good man and citizen and was much respected by all who knew him. He leaves to mourn his death three sons and a daughter, David Lund of Stratford; Oscar Lund of Kensington, Kansas; Frank J. Lund of this city, and Miss Minnie Lund of Stratford. Seven grandchildren also survive. Five children, his wife and brother, Andrew Lund, preceded him in death. Stratford Courier 1930 Family History Nels J., Andrew, Swen Lund The following is a brief family history of Nels John Lund, Andrew Lund and Swen E. Lund. These three brothers were born in Kraftmas, Hallingberg socken, Kalmar Lan, Sweden. Their father was Johannes Johnson, and the mother, Brita Katrina Nelson. Their grandfather was Nels Nelson, a farmer. The father, Johannes Johnson, operated and owned a saw mill, flour mill, and factory in connection with a large estate, at the place named above. There were eleven boys and one girl in the family. On July 8, 1866, the two sons, Nels John and Swen E., left for America, arriving on the German boat, Berushia. It took thirty days to make the trip. These brothers changed their names to Lund. To them the crossing of the ocean was allowed to stand as a dividing line between the name Johnson and Lund. There were eight members in this party, viz. Mr. and Mrs. Nels J. Lund and their two children, David and Ann, Mr. and Mrs. Swen E. Lund, and also a friend, Mrs. Sophia Ferlen, and John Erickson, who later settled at Kiron in Crawford county. The party arrived at Boone August 8, 1866. Boone was then but a village and was very small, and was the end of the railroad at that time. From Boone, they were taken to the Olof Ferlen place, an old friend of the family on the southeast quarter of section 20, Marion township. This locality was then known as Swede Bend. Andrew Lund and family arrived in America about a year after the S.E. and John Lund families and settled near Dayton.
